I have heard about this problem but it has never happened to me before.
What causes stuck notes? I assume it is a midi problem. So far I haven't seen it with an RT only song. I am using an SD50 hard synth for midi and a Focusrite 2i2 interface as a sound card. I previous thread said to unfreeze the offending song and regenerate. This seems to work but the problem is happening on several songs and is intermittent so it's hard to tell. Is there anything I can do permanently?
Thanks Tony

I know of one possible cause: MIDI polyphony. Each hardware synth like your Roland SD-50 has a maximum limit of the notes it can handle and sound at one time. That limit may be 64, or maybe 128; not sure about the SD-50. You might think that BIAB could not generate that many messages to overwhelm a hardware synth, but it can because some patches require up to six messages per sound. Multiply this by many notes in a chord, and many tracks of MIDI instruments including a drum kit, and it's easy to hit the limit. MIDI "on" messages must be followed by MIDI "off", but sometimes those are not received. It's why music programs using MIDI all have a "Panic Button" to turn off MIDI.
To test this, mute some tracks and see if the problem goes away.
Other possibilities include system memory (reboot) and corrupted BIAB files.
EDIT: Just checked and your SD-50 has 128. That's good, but sometimes not enough.

Don't know if it helps, but there is a checkbox in MIDI options to "Send Extra Note-Offs". This might help with stuck notes. It's unchecked by default, but worth a try to check it and see if it solves the problem.

It's unchecked by default, but worth a try to check it and see if it solves the problem. As you say, worth a try but it is supposed to be designed to enhance a STOP command. In the meantime I have programmed a foot switch to send F12 - MIDI Panic, much better than trying to hit a small F12 key. Tony

Stuck notes:
All midi notes have 2 very important signals in them.... the ON signal, telling the synth when it's supposed to start the note, and of course the OFF signal telling it... yup, you guessed it.... when to stop playing that note. Of course there are many more signals in the data for the note... velocity, pitch, volume, etc.... but we're not worried about those in this conversation.
A note gets stuck on for a few possible reasons.
1. Something happened to make the synth miss the off signal...
2. The computer decides to glitch, or the driver or the synth itself, and essentially lock up due to a driver issue or something else in the OS.... since many synths load to memory, a corruption of that load will do it too.
Most DAW's and programs that work with MIDI will have some sort of EMERGENCY KILL SWITCH on the dashboard that will immediately send the off signal to the synth. You should always learn where that button is located.
If you work with audio, there's a very small chance you will ever get a stuck note.... although I have seen audio loops when something corrupts the OS and the computer is about to crash. My old laptop is prone to OS crashes and the audio loop freeze before the BSOD happens to it occasionally.
Most likely, though, stuck notes happen when working with MIDI synths. I used to do a lot of MIDI stuff in my early days and this stuck note thing is fairly common in that realm. In many cases, I could hit the KILL SWITCH, and everything would be fine. It simply reset the synth.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
