I want to practice solo guitar that I am playing, and use Band In A Box for tempo only during practice. As a second part to this question I would like to build another song that: After the first time through the song, just with the drums playing, then I would like the other instruments to come in, first the bass, then after another time through the song, then the piano comes in, just like a real band practice.

Is any of this possible? Can you help me with the steps I would need to take to do this?

TIA,

Ken

Yes. You press F5 on a measure and you will see the pull-down options to mute or unmute each instrument. I would recommend you first edit the song form to unfold into one long song.

And welcome to the forum.

I know I saw this ability in a tutorial now I can't find it. Say I have 3 choruses of a 12 bar blues and I want to unfold this into one 36 bar tune. Where in the menus is this option?

Thanks

In version 2015, I think it was Edit, Unfold. It's a bit different now in 2016.

Remember that SOLO is also very useful if you just want to hear one or two tracks in the mix. Rather than muting the rest, just solo the ones you want.

One of the best ways to do what you said.... start with one track playing by itself and add tracks as you would like them to come in ....is to use a DAW in the process. It involves another step or two, but I for one, think it's worth every additional minute it takes.

Write the song in BB and yes, unfold it to one linear chorus as PG calls it. You can export the tracks individually from this place in the process if you wish. I don't.

Save and close.

Open in Real Band and let that generate the tracks again using the real tracks, and export them from this point in the process.

Import the tracks into a DAW and use volume envelopes to bring things in and out. Save that and export the final mix from there.

Below is a screenshot of the volume envelopes in Dust on the Floor on my web site. I use envelopes in every single song.

Ken, welcome to the forum. BIAB allows you to quickly build customized tracks for practice.

For example:

A BIAB song is limited to 255 measures. This allows you to use up to 5 different instruments bringing in a new instrument every 52 measure. (255/5=51)

Start with 1-51 drum solo, 52-103 drum and bass (you can also solo the bass if you wish)

104-155 - acoustic guitar

You can add/solo instruments in and out anywhere in the song to create variety using bar settings (F5).

Input can be very fast using the (K) shortcut.

Enter bars 1-8. Select bar 9. K <enter> will copy bars 1-8 to 9-16
Select bar 17. k16 <enter> completes through bar 32 bar 33 k32<enter> and so on.

and continue this process through bar 255 and use the Chorus button to repeat your practice song for up to 40 times. A 255 measure song at 120bpm is 17:08 minutes on my chord sheet.

Thats 1:26 hr.

"Good thing it wasn't a giant anaconda!" ;-)

Edit->Unfold is correct.
Thanks.

Thank You Matt, What a great group here. I'm diving in but will be a little wobbly as I learn I'm sure... Great news that Band In A Box allows such freedom to build a song... Looks like some great fun ahead...

Tim, Much appreciation for your response. Look at the great comments here. These forums have given me a place to stand and go to work learning Band In A Box. There is much to learn so I'm just trying to stick to the basics right now... rhythm and tempo... my first great desire is to get an understanding of how that works and I can see there is great potential in that one area alone... Thank You Tim...

Guitarhacker, What a name... Love it! I've just sold my Korg SV1 keyboard so I don't have a way to input songs directly from a midi device, but that's okay as I'm devoting myself to guitar now as it proves itself to be an instrument that offers capabilities for 'feeling' and command in music that the keyboard cannot enter into... Just look at what the lowly guitar can do, starting with the humble beginning of an instrument that could not be heard over the horn section of an orchestra, now thrilling mobs of millions of concert-goers with tremendous power that could melt any horn... well... I digress... I love the guitar. Thanks for mentioning the DAW. I have been using Logic Pro for a few years now and am looking forward to first experiencing how Band In A Box can interface with a DAW. Amazing stuff here. I'm mainly going to be studying guitar and taking lessons that will get me into a higher level of hacking as I'm sure we all want to attain. The electronic side, Band In A Box, and the DAW will become the stage that assembles and orchestrates the great works of art that are ahead of us.

Charlie Fogle, Thanks also for your input along with these other fine gentlemen. I'm in good company and that makes me feel right at home here. Steady as she goes I say as I see you have good command of Band In A Box and I will take some time to ponder what you have said as well as referring back to this first thread of mine on this forum. This is that area I will stay focused on until I learn the basics. Already, Band In A Box is helping me, I've input the Pink Floyd song "Comfortably Numb" which is an astounding number to practice blues guitar technique. Playing guitar, as well as most music instruments, is a lonely business. I have tried 'sitting in' with other musicians in live performance and you know, I don't like the hours, and most often there is not that much playing but waiting by as someone takes over the stage... have I said too much already? but Band In A Box is a non-complaining group of backup musicians that will allow me to practice and learn the instrument I love. enuf said. Thank You Charlie Fogle for your helping me learn how to proceed with Band In A Box...

1:26 hr.of practice and then, being the weekend... I will rest.
.

Wow, Look! I exported a Band In A Box tune to MIDI and imported it into a Logic Pro project and it came out with all of the appropriate tracks, some with different instruments assigned, but that can be worked with as MIDI tracks can be assigned from a myriad of MIDI instruments available in Logic Pro. I am working on a Mac so I don't have Real Band, but that is okay also because it's just one step, Export and then Import to get to the real meat of making a fabulous production with lots and lots of flexibility in the DAW. Thanks again for the tips on this... hacking away now but sure to get something good going as soon as the dust settles...

Ken, no need to export/import into Logic - you can use "drag and drop" function in BIAB to make moving into Logic super easy.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
