Just registered. First post. Hope I have this in the correct forum. Considering buying Band in a Box. Have a few questions, some of which might seem strange but their answers will tell me a lot about if it can do what I want. Here's the first one.
Can a newbie user get BIB to do a reasonable approximation of Bernard "Pretty" Purdie drums i.e. something approaching the Purdie shuffle?
Thanks.

Hi. I know who you mean, but I'm not familiar with this beat as a drummer would be. Is it possible for you to put up a short audio file of that sound somewhere on the Internet (like a free public Dropbox account), and put a link to it here? Is there a hit song with the specific sound?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOWdp1sOxvAHere's the Bernard Purdie shuffle. I don't think any of BIAB's 12/8 styles are like this. Ray

Here's a link to a youtube vid where he breaks it down really nicely: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOWdp1sOxvABonham also does something similar on Led Zeppelin's "Fool in the Rain": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14GYov0EdyQAnd here's a great link with him working with Steely Dan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ldtieSEyQM

That was great fun! I recognize the sound better, now that it has been broken down so clearly.
I too think there is not a comparable sound in BIAB RealDrums, but I could be wrong.

I too think there is not a comparable sound in BIAB RealDrums, but I could be wrong. That surprises me. Purdie has played on a gazillion records by major artists. It's not like his style is unusual or obscure, or anything. Everybody has heard him (most likely without knowing it). I expected to receive an answer like "It can be done but you have to be more advanced than a newbie to make it happen" not "it's just not there".

Answers given here are honest and reflect end-users knowledge of the products. This page, from the company itself has many audio demos where you can select and listen to different drum styles. You should review yourself, but under "RealDrums Set 4: Rock, Pop and More! " there is a Pop128^ style. It's not Bernard, but it might work for you. I wouldn't be too put off unless you are considering purchasing only if it includes the Purdie Shuffle. There are many fantastic real drums by excellent artists (Craig Scott, Terry Clarke to name a few) included in the various packages.

And Danny Gottlieb, with whom I've done a concert and a session. Amazing jazz drummer.

No, I won't be put off by that alone. I asked that question as a way of trying to determine the level of detail that might be available in selecting drum parts - i.e does BIAB get down to that level.
That said, I'm still surprised that such a widely known, recorded and respected studio player as Purdie wasn't included in the palette. Maybe he declined the gig?
Thanks for the link and the info.

You could also call PG Music Sales (Pacific time) and ask them. The number is at the bottom of their home page, here: http://www.pgmusic.com/index.html

You can create anything you want with midi but for Real Drums, it's whatever the session calls for. I agree this would be a cool style for a RD project. Put it in the Wishlist. Bob

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
