Hello PG Forums, I want to introduce the concept of Gain staging. In a nutshell, its the process of making sure signal has the best signal to noise ratio at every stage of the mix-down process. There is a fantastic article on SoundOnSound's website below: http://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/gain-staging-your-daw-software

Nice article, thanks. Made me think of Mac (missed in recent years). He wrote one on gain-staging (below) for a website a bunch of us did many years ago .. http://audiominds.com/gain.htmlHis wisdom is still all over the interwebs..
Make your sound your own! .. I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Yes, Mac immediately came to my mind too. Not only for that resource, but constant tips in the forum about getting the best live or recorded sound.

With the technology we have, there's no need to record and mix "as hot as possible". Getting a sensible level at every stage of the process takes a bit of time to learn how to do it right.
I can recall a time when I had meters in the red and a weak, thin, wave in the track after recording. With some experience, it was possible to keep everything out of the red and have a nice, solid wave after the fact. It comes from watching carefully the levels you have coming in and going out of every stage in the process including the FX and VST's.
You can always turn something up after the recording and mixing is done, but turning it down is the hard part. Yep.... leave lots of headroom in the tracks and in the mix.
Good points in that article.
You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

I'll be sure to reference his content once I have some downtime. Bob Katz talks about gain staging in his book in mastering. Also a very good read!

Some great stuff in these articles, especially for anyone of the old school of all analog.
It's not the focus here, but I've always found that awareness of gain staging is most important in live sound situations. Until recently, this remained an exclusively analog environment. Unless you take care to keep a strong signal at every place in the system, it's easy to amplify the omnipresent noise from ambient noise, radio frequency interference, losses from particularly long cable runs and multiple connection points, electromagnetic interference, impedance mismatches, weak output from some mics etc.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
