A short time ago I had a PC crash. This may or may NOT be significant in what follows. AFAIK I have reloaded my entire BB2016 UltraPlusPak I keep my WIP SGU's in a desktop folder for quick access and have now noticed something unusual. If you look at the pic for the folder as accessed through BIAB at Start Up of the program, it shows the 2016 motif and any SGU file opens normally and all is well. HOWEVER, if you open the Desktop Folder itself (from the Desktop screen) - 2nd pic - it shows the older 2015 or earlier BIAB motif. With BIAB closed down and I click on a file, it opens BIAB right enough but as a BLANK FILE, not the file I'm supposed to be opening. Then I have to access the file I wanted via BIAB “Open” as previous. This is also true if I make an SGU and save it directly to my Desktop screen – I get the OLD BIAB motif and it wont open directly, but going through BIAB, when open, its there with the 2016 motif and opens fine. This didnt used to be the case – any SGU in the Desktop folder (accessed directly) would open BIAB and be the correct file. I have done the right click>open with and it shows the OLD symbol. If I continue to >choose program, the 2016 Band In A Box application is THERE but even if I click on “always use selected program to open this type of file” and tick the Box, it opens BIAB as a blank and the motifs don't change. Is there a check box somewhere in Prefs (?) that sets them all up to BIAB2016?? Baffled!! Any help always appreciated. Ian

Hi John Nope - that made no difference. I also ran CCleaner to be sure. I'm sure the solution is in the "Why do the two views of the same folder show different motifs?". Cheers ian

MORE INFO - Additinal info on odd behaviour - if I DOUBLE CLICK on an OLD BIAB motif icon SGU, it opens BIAB but is BLANK and I have to go to the "open" button to actually open that SGU - as I said before. BUT - if I RIGHT CLICK on an old style icon and then just click "Open" it does indeed open the SGU and it is Correct and Plays fine. Any ideas? Ian

One other thing to try. Go back in and turn off (then exit and relaunch BIAB), then turn back on "Associate BIAB files with BIAB". It sometimes gets reset. Just a thought, especially since you're getting a blank when loading from File Explorer.

Did that - made no difference - no change. What I have noticed when RIGHT CLICKING on >open with, is that the Check box for "always associate - - " never stays checked. Next time I go to an SGU file this way, its unchecked again. And this doesnt change WHY I have two different year icons, depending on how I get to BIAB. Ian

Here's how I've solved this issue in the past. I haven't tried this with XP so hopefully it still works.
First, open Band-in-a-Box, go to File - File Utilities, then Remove File Associations. You'll be asked if you're sure, choose Yes and close Band-in-a-Box.
Then open BIAB again, go back to File - File Utilities, and hit Associate File Types. Confirm when asked again. Don't close BIAB now, just minimize it, then double-click on a song file in that folder. If it opens in Band-in-a-Box that time, then the problem will likely be solved.
If anyone needs to try this solution with a newer OS, then they'd need to turn off User Account Control first, but of course with XP that's not needed (or possible).
I'm running XP so no Administrator AFAIK - and also I NEVER have run it that way and until now no issues.
I would still do it. It doesn't hurt anything to change the setting, and experience has shown often fixes the problems. And you can always change it back.

Sorry John - I just drive the thing!! Can you help me and tell me where Administrator is please?! Cheers ian
1. Right click on the program icon: Run as administrator 2. Right click on the program icon: Properties (I don't recall where it is in XP, now it is under compatibility tab), select Run as administrator and it will always start the program in administrator mode
No problem. I can't look at XP right now (I have it in a virtual machine, even though I'm running Windows 10 normally). I'll look tonight when I get home. It's been awhile.

I changed to running as Administrator - many thnaks for the Tips - but it didnt change anything. Kent - doing what you said WORKS! Now by clicking on the file icon directly, BIAB opens and shows and plays the correct SGU. Many thanks. It hasnt changed the strange fact that viewing the Folder through "open" in BIAB shows the new 2016 BB icon, but viewing the Folder from the Desktop shows the old 2015 (and earlier) icon. Any ideas why? Its not significant really now that BIAB works as it used to - but I would be interested in why and how to fix it. Ian

Another trick that has worked to refresh the icon cache (but doesn't always work) is to right click on the desktop and select Properties.
Then, click on the "Settings" tab, then change your color quality from 32-bit to 16-bit. Reboot the computer, set it back to 32-bit, then reboot again.
This worked about 50% of the time back when I had XP and icon display problems.

Y'know what, John - that was the RIGHT ANSWER!! Didnt even need to reboot the PC - I just went back into Properties a second time and changed it back to 32bit. WHy it should be that, I have no idea but it WORKED. Many thanks. Ian

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows® Today!
Update your Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows for free with build 1111!
With this update, there's more control when saving images from the Print Preview window, we've added defaults to the MultiPicker for sorting and font size, updated printing options, updated RealTracks and other content, and addressed user-reported issues with the StylePicker, MIDI Soloists, key signature changes, and more!
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
