I have 2008.5 build 262 on both my Dell laptop (used for live playing), and
my Dell desktop. On my laptop is usually where I add new songs, or edit
older songs by adding Real Drums etc.,create a new style, or edit an
existing style and then "save as".

After a number of months or more it's time to transfer the above (mostly
new BIAB songs and edited songs ) and a few new styles to the desktop.

Back when I was running Windows 3.1 this "transfer" wasn't such a "big job".
I would transfer maybe 15 songs at a time from my old Zenith laptop to the
desktop using a floppy (the Zenith only had a floppy drive). Currently both
my 'puters are running XP with USB & CDROM write and DVD read.

In the last year or two I've used a USB stick to do some limited song transfers
(selecting each song one at a time and putting on the USB stick).

Need some advice/suggestions on a more efficient or bulk transfer method
to get songs between my computers (appreciate step-by-step help).

interface,PC-200 Roland keyboard,482 BBE Maximizer,Lexicon Reflex Module,

Thanks,

G'day Leeman,
I assume both machines have Ethernet ports. Just connect 'em together and create a workgroup.

If you have a broadband modem/router then it will likely have more than 1 ethernet port (not necessarily, but the odds are good) - just plug both machines in and setup the LAN. (Easy if you follow the prompts in the network neighbourhood dialogue.

If you don't have a multi port router, then it is possible that you can connect them directly together. Many ethernet cards these days will auto sense "polarity"

I would stick with the USB flash drive. BIAB songs and styles are very small so even a small USB drive will hold a lot of files. The ethernet option mentioned by Lawrie would work but I think you would need a direct computer to computer cable to pull that off (a standard enet cable won't do that for you). Laplink and some other software/hardware combos include that cable and have an easy to use interface, basically making it look like you are working within one computer. But if you already have the USB drive, it should work fine for you. Your choice.
Good luck.

G'day Barry,
as I mentioned in my prior post, most modern machines auto sense (polarity*) - you don't need a specific cable with many (note, many, not all) modern machines. In any case, this is only issue if there aren't spare ports on his router. Come to think of it, he may already have both machines connected for internet access to his router in which case this bit is done.

I agree that a USB key is likely the easiest in many respects, but the request was specifically for a more efficient, bulk transfer method.

With the networking option, once you have a share set up you don't need Laplink or it's ilk.

* "polarity" - not the best choice of words perhaps. Many ethernet ports auto sense and negotiate send and receive pairs. Making "null modem" type crossover cables unnecessary.

Just re-read this and it sounds like I'm a bit irritated - I apologise, not irritated, just trying to clarify.

Lawrie, no apology necessary. It has been a while since I was involved with enet stuff. Thanks for the info on the newer computers and their smarter workings. Makes it easier to hook them up.
Thanks again
Barry

If you get your computers networked, there are synchronization programs that work great. I use Vice Versa but Microsoft has one (I don't remember the name). Both programs will keep your computers synch'd and can be customized for things such as only copying new or changed files - which is really nice when you have a bunch of files.

The name of Microsoft's sync is called SyncToy. If you don't network your computers, both SyncToy and ViceVersa can use a flash memory stick to synchronize with. Once you configure the sync, you just use a pull down menu to perform the sync.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
