If My last song post of the year goes out with a big Thank You! to those who have taken the time to listen and/or give feedback to my creations this year - you have rescued me from trying to figure out if my stuff is working from the squawks of the birds around the house.
This song was a kind of exercise I did when first starting to write;
take the chords of I song I liked, ( in this case the late, great John Martyn`s
May You Never ), write my own lyrics, keeping the feel of the song that inspired them... and see where it went.

If
if your biggest secret should be told
may your greatest gift allow
a smile for the judge
and no tears for the crowd
if you play the fool for a raging bull
may you find a friendly gate
where you stand your ground
the other side of hate
you`re such a sweet soul
you`re the fire to my coal
and I`m leaving you way too soon
I never learned to cook
there`s no time to write a book
so I`ll leave you with this tune
and if the worst comes to be
may life do for thee
what your guitar does for my poetry
and spring does for the cherry tree
if push comes to shove on the dance floor of love
may you never miss a beat
you win or you lose
but you land on your feet
and if your greatest misfortune be to wake monday morning
after two days of rain
may your umbrella of song
open the same
you`re such a sweet soul
you`re the fire to my coal
and I`m leaving you way too soon
I never learned to cook
there`s no time to write a book
so I`ll leave you with this tune
and if the worst comes to be
may life do for thee
what your guitar does for my poetry
and spring does for the cherry tree
