HI...others suggested I repost as a new topic:

Hi all...while I am a long time user of BIAB-Windows, I am a new user of the Mac version...My question is simple, and I am a bit ashamed I can't figure it out...

I can certainly route the MIDI through the IAC to sampletank, or Sfz, put the instruments on the correct channel, and be fine.

I can even select the instruments in the plug ins...but I have been unable to get sounds using just the plugins...tried changing channels, forcing MIDI, etc..yet, I can hear the sound when I activate the keyboard..just nothing when I hit play (even though the mixer shows messages in the channel).

Can anyone give me some hints as to what I might be missing?

I figure it has to be simple, I am just not seeing it...

thanks!

Steve

Hey Steve, this is from the other thread, try this :

Go to the "Preferences..." menu item and click the "Audio" button, then click the "Audio Devices" button.
What do you have set up as an audio device in BIAB ?

Also you could try temporarily setting your MIDI output to "Apple DLS Synth" like Icelander said in the other thread, to see if that helps route MIDI internally to the plug-ins (rather than to an external MIDI port).
This is what I have set as a default in BIAB, and I've never had a problem with instrument plug-ins.

Again, hopefully this helps.

- Jay

Hi Jay

The audio out is through the built in output, which is all that is available...

yes, if I route to DLS synth, the plugins will play...

I even made sure I wasn't getting both ST and DLS outputs, and I wasn't...

Weird...I have no idea why that would be true, and why it would matter...

But, "computers...." (said deprecatingly)

Thanks!

Hopefully that is what you were looking for.
I normally keep the default MIDI output set to the DLS Synth.

Then when I want to route a BIAB MIDI track to another program, standalone synth or external device, I use that "Select Port/ Instrument" dialog (in the screenshot of above) to route tracks MIDI where I want it to go.

The biggest gotcha with that, is that if you want to send MIDI from BIAB to another program (say sforzando), you have to launch sforzando before BIAB so it's MIDI input is seen by BIAB when it launches.

Hopefully that makes some sense the way I said it. smile

Interesting...as I am naturally curious, I am still scratching my head as to why your fix worked....I would not have guessed that changing the midi stream from IAC to DLS should affect the functioning of a plug-in..I sent a question of to PG music to see if there is an explanation that I might be able to use to solve other issues that might arise...

Now, if they could just fix the yellow "OK" button in the stylepicker that I couldn't find for 20 minutes...and then thought it was just "greyed - out"... :-)

It worked because the IAC connects you to something outside of BBox (i.e. hooking to external things & applications), whereas the plugins are being loaded and run by BBox itself, internally. For instance, the built-in DLS is essentially a plugin too, if you hadn't considered that (evident by the fact that you can now change its sound source with the Plugin interface in BBox akin to any other Plugin),
It may be confusing you that many VSTi Plugins also come with their own "Standalone" applications, like SampleTank and sforzando. Not the same thing.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
