Hi. Just noticed that I got a free copy of Cubase LE8 with my audio interface. Anyone got any comments about it? What's it like? How does it fit in with something like RealBand? Next step or not necessary? I was considering Reaper in due course but perhaps this is a better option? Thanks.

Many interfaces do come with one of the LE versions of a more advanced DAW. Often they are quite functional but limited, hence the LE designation.

You would get better answers from the Cubase forums but perhaps someone here uses it.

While Real band is essential also a DAW, you will find that there are a number of folks here who use a full fledged DAW as their final mixing destination for the tracks. A DAW lets you do things that are difficult to do in BB and even in RB at this point in RB's evolution.

Personally, I use Sonar as my DAW. Some DAW's are better at certain things and some do things that the others do but do it in a way that certain people prefer. Choosing a DAW is really a personal thing and mostly about what you like and how you work. No matter what DAW you choose, it's a given that you can do everything you need to do and they all will sound as good as you are able to make them sound. IN other words, the DAW isn't going to help or hinder your sound from one to the next. It's ALL on you and what you know and how you do things.

Next step? Yeah I think so. But that's just my personal opinion and for what I do and how I do it, I could not do this as easily as I can if I didn't use Sonar as my final step.

I know some folks who have 3 or 4 DAW's. My suggestion is to get one, learn it and stick with it unless you find that something in it is hindering your creative process.

Mi dos centavos.

Do you have a favorite DAW now? If not then just learn RealBand. You have it so your cost is nothing. After learning and using it if you find that it is lacking something that you need then go looking at other DAWs.

I have been using Cakewalk's software for years and I am currently using Sonar Platinum. Thus I am very familiar with it and can do things very rapidly with it. However some here using RealBand as their only DAW. It just depends on when, if ever, a DAW doesn't do what you need it to do that will determine if you need another on or not.

Just my two cents.

PS just remember that there is a learning curve with all DAWs. The more expensive and all incorporating the more of a learning curve.

My goal this weekend is to move just enough each day so that no one pokes me to see if I'm dead or not.

Since you have Cubase LE, and are maybe looking for a DAW, I would use it. Find out if it has full VST support. See how many tracks it supports. See what functions are fully operational and which ones are not.

If it works well enough, use it. Many folks who got the free Sonar LE bundled with their gear, are still using it.

This is from the Cubase website: https://www.steinberg.net/en/landing_pages/cubase_le_7/download_cubase_le_7.html

It looks pretty capable to me from watching the tutorial

For me, I was concerned with the learning curve and the time associated in the learning process. I did n ot want to spend hours and hours learning a certain DAW and then need to switch to something else. After trying several DAWs including Cubase LE I finally settled on Reaper. It's very stable, no crashing at all, does every thing I need it to do and more, and each time I need to learn how to do something I don't know how to do I watch a 15 minute tutorial on their website by Kenny Gioia and I've got it down. The value of the training videos on line has been priceless to me.
I've ditched 3 - 4 other DAWs and now use Band In A Box, RealBand, Reaper and once in a while I use Audacity for quick edits or converting formats.

Does the noise in your head bother me ?

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
