I was doing my first attempt at importing .XML chords info into BBox, and noticed that all the dom 7th chords were being called "(Blues)", like in the screenshot below.
Now, I realised of course that this had to be because the notes in these particular dom 7th chords didn't include that annoying flat 9, like BBox usually does with its own take on this same chord, I just never knew this alternative way of writing this chord existed in its 'vocabulary'.
My initial thought thus was 'Great, I finally know how to make dom 7th chords in BBox the proper way!', but things of course weren't going to be that straight forward - It turns out I can't write parentheses into the chord field at all, which makes me wonder how the program could do that on its own for this XML import.
Anyone noticed this "(Blues)" thing before in the chord sheet? And, more importantly, if so how can we manually enter such a chord?

Good question.

I often use a 9 chord when I want to hear a dominant 7th in BIAB with little chance of a flatted or sharped 9th.

As do I, but that's a cop-out "solution" to me still, because a 9th chord is no more a proper dom7th chord than a dom7b9 is! smirk
I've been asking this same thing in the Mac section since we're still a release behind (in case that matters to this particular issue), and have been told that this "(Blues)" thing does in fact exist in that Chord Builder list (?), but behaves in a faulty way. I have yet to try this for myself, though...plot thickens indeed.

The "Jazz Down" chords under Edit-Chords, will change a 9th chord to a dominant 7th.

Really? Now, that's interesting (and news to me), thanks for this.
So does it also result in a 7th that plays without an added b9 like BBox is so prone to, if you know?

Yes. In order to have a 7th chord with a b9 you have to spell it out. C7b9 Parentheses will be around the b9 after you enter the chord. I've heard that in a few styles the "Jazz Down" won't work. I haven't experienced this myself.

Well, I do know that's not true when simply typing a dom 7 chord in manually, for that always gives you a played flat 9 in the mix (especially with the midi styles).
If, however, it is the case with the Jazz Down conversion, then great. I'll be sure to put that to some testing in near future, thanks again for the info.

I get a b9 sometimes from a 7th chord, certainly not always. Not even most of the time. But it is there sometimes when I really don't want it so I'm proactive against it. I suspect the chord progression helps determine this, and I write my own progressions so it's hard to generalize.

Quite true, and I should have inserted "almost" into that last post I made to be accurate, for this is an irregular event as you rightly say.
As for my initial "(Blues)" chord subject, I have since established that by selecting this one from the Chord Builder you do indeed get a definite dom 7th without that pesky flat 9, every time. So Matt, there we have found our sure way to get precisely the type of 7th we want cool
This, however, still raises an issue - not all chord types from the Chord Builder can be typed in manually, case in point being this very "(Blues)" chord type, and that ought to be addressed by the dev.

p.s. and if you check that Chord Builder list, you'll see right next in that list below the (Blues) one is a (7Blues) choice - they give the same result in terms of notes, just like "aug" and "+" chords are the same. There are a good few of these in that list, obviously to account for different writing conventions.

The Chord Builder list. It lists all the chord types BBox can currently handle, including this "(Blues)" chord type that until last week I hadn't noticed before.

I'm a bit lost here. I wonder can you explain the steps required to select the Blues chord?
Thanks

Hello VideoTrack
Open ChordBuilder (right mouse click or CTRL-Shift-B) and select (blues) or (blues7) from "other->" (its way down the list somewhere in the upper middle).

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
