Anybody have/had the Roland sonic cell .

Just wondering what the sounds are like and any info at all.

I am looking at a new possible hardware synth.

So again any info would be appreciated.

Hi Big John

The sonic cell is an excellent package because besides excellent sounds it has a mic input as well

It is also updatable

I have used one for about 4 years and still enjoy its modern quality - there are some sonic cell demos on the Roland website

Recommended

if you are looking for an older sounds and strings look at the Ketron

Just my opinion

I guess they all depend on the sounds you really want to use. I find the Ketron is by FAR the best with acoustics (like saxophones and trumpets.) They are Italian and they appear to sample high-quality instruments played by professionals.) Both Yamaha and Roland seem very artificial in that arena.

Thanks for the replies.

Hi Jazzman

I have been doing a lot of research on the sonic cell.

Am I right on saying it is like a vsti in biab and a daw.

And does that mean like coyote you can use the sonic cell vsti to drag to wav and get the sonic cell sounds as it changes to wav.

Hope you get what I mean.

No, the Sonic Cell is a hardware synth, so you can't generate sounds directly like you can with a VSTi or a DXi synth. You have to actually record the output of the Sonic Cell to capture the sounds. The Ketron units are the same.

Yes I am thinking the same ,but I read that the sonic cell has its own software that you download, and it can appear in you pc system as a vsti controller ,if for want of a better way of putting it,

As it comes with a free version of sonar le.

I think the VSTi interface is more to directly control the Sonic Cell, as opposed to being able to use it to render tracks.

Take a look at this discussion.

Wait- you would replace a Sonic Cell with the 1080? I think you meant the other way around.

As I was thinking the jv1080 is older, surely the sonic cell has more improved sounds ?.

Well, yes. The Sonic Cell is relatively recent. I have owned many Roland MIDI synths including the Fantom XR and the Integra-7. I assume the Sonic Cell would be using many of those sounds. When I first listened to a promo for it, I recognized the Roland sound set as similar to my Edirol (by Roland) SD-80. Isn't the 1080 at least 20 yeas old by now, or did I get the wrong unit?

Yes it is about 20 + years old , the jv 1080 is a great oldie but a goldie,

When I said replace I really meant to add , I will keep the 1080.

I did notice going through old threads in the forum you are knowledgeable on the rolands and had to hear your say on this.

Going by what you have said, I think the jv 1080 is better than the sd-80.

Thanks

As I recall, I thought the SD-80 was a bit better, but it was a long time ago.

yes Matt

it was my mistake I was thinking about the sound canvas.

Though the Roland forum die hard's always give the 1080 a good review .

Although I think it is down to the effects and settings in these old modules.

Did you have the sonic cell at anytime ?.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
