Hi

Can anybody tell me how to stop sonar changing the instrument of a midi track.

I set it for a specific instrument sound but it keeps reverting back to the sound in the midi file.

Thanks

We need more info.

What synth are you using? I'm assuming you're using TTS unless you state otherwise.

You have to be sure you have your channels set and saved properly. I explain this on me website (link at the bottom) on the recording page and look for TTS advanced.

That shows how to have several instruments playing different sounds at the same time. Apply the principle to the one channel you're using. It's been a very long time since I have used TTS and midi but I think you need to set all the parameters for TTS in the track inspector.

I assume you may have imported the MIDI track from somewhere? It likely has a patch change embedded into it, and you will need to be able to edit the MIDI instructions to delete that. If you load it into the Melody track of BIAB, you can step edit through the MIDI instructions and delete the patch change. Although I haven't done it, I assume SONAR has the same capability. What version of SONAR are you running (mine is Platinum)?

with TTS you must have the track and midi channel numbers correct. my website explains how to do that,

otherwise, everything comes out as piano

Duh, I should have realized Artist by the post title. I thought it meant you were an artist using SONAR.

Just curious, did you try this question in the Cakewalk forum and not get an answer?

Matt

I contacted cakewalk support they fobbed me off, with all interfaces are different etc.

That took a fortnight, I think I am winning following the last posts from you guys.

Thanks

Beatmaster, I understand. SONAR company support is undergoing major changes, and has been unresponsive or hard to reach (now, impossible by phone). We users expect that to change soon. To me, your question did not sound like an interface question at all.

But what I meant was, you should register for the SONAR USER forum. There are a lot of knowledgeable users on there (including several of us here, such as Herb [above] and MarioD).

Beatmaster, in Sonar Artist right click on a MIDI track and select Event List View. In the Event List View menu uncheck notes: this will allow you so see only the CCs and Program Changes (PG) in the list. Highlight and delete all Program change in all MIDI tracks.

In Sonar make sure that each MIDI track output goes to TTS-1. It is especially important to make sure that each MIDI track TTS-1 channel is a different channel and that channel number matches the channel number in TTS-1 that carries that instrument. For Example:
Sonar channel 1 (piano) matches TTS-1 channel 1 (piano)
Sonar channel 2 (bass) matches TTS-1 channel 2 (bass)
Sonar channel 10 (drums) matches TTS-10 channel 1 (drums)

You have to assign the instruments in TTS-1. All 16 channels are available for any instrument but channel 10 is usually dedicated for drums. Again you can pick the drum set that you want.

The picture below shows how this is done in Platinum so yours may be a little different. Each MIDI track has windows with drop down arrows. This is where you assign everything including what instruments you want in the TTS-1. The following is a list of what the little letters means in each window from left to right:
i=MIDI input, your keyboard or other MIDI controller and channel
o=output - your TTS-1
c=TTS-1 output channel - each one must be different for different instrument
b=bank - TTS-1 has many banks of sounds-you pick a bank here
p=patch - the instrument you want. Setting this also set it up in the TTS-1.

Good luck and I hope this helps. If you need more help just ask.

Ps - If you can't see the image let me know and I'll send it to you via email.

Me, it's not about how many times you fail, it's about how many times you get back up.
Cop, that's not how field sobriety tests work.

Indeed, the user forum often gets you answers that solve your issue faster than the support email.

And IIRC, they don't offer phone support on the low end stuff.

I'd suggest asking your question in the Music Creator forum or the Sonar forum. Give as much info on your setup as possible.

Did you check out my web page on how to set up TTS "advanced" for multiple instruments? That may solve your issue and answer your question.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
