If Tear Drops Were DollarsA Sinatra-type Big Band Swing number typical of the 1940s and 1950s. I realize my vocals are always less than stellar. Other than that, open to any comments or suggestions that might make this better. Whenever we write a lyric for a song from a past era, we try compose the lyric as it might have been in that era. In this era (1940s and 1950s) lyrics were, with numerous exceptions, rather innocent and somewhat socially or personally romantic and/or carefree. That's what we tried to accomplish with this one. Also, we know that "Tear Drops" should be one word, ie., "Teardrops". But, being the mental clutz I often am, I typed it as two separate words when I registered it with BMI. So, that's why I left it that way here. Duh! Thanks in advance. Best to everyone. Captures the essence of the era beautifully. In the 40's most of the movies had a big band song and dance sequence which this song would have fitted perfectly. Cheers.

You pretty much nailed the feel of that era I think, both in the music and the lyrics!
Enjoyed the listen, well done!

Enjoyed the listen, well done! Why, thank ya so much! We love this usoic and it comes to usd pretty easily. Justy getting from brain to fingertips is the hard part. e grew up with music. yep, we're old farts - septuagenarians . We miss this music of innocence and fun. So, we try to write a few of them. Glad ya liked it. Thanks again! Alan

Alan,
This is really well done. Quite special.
You did a GREAT job of using the horns to create the sound of the era.
The write also does a good job of "being of the era".
A couple of things struck my as somewhat "outside" the era. Your vocal (which is quite good, btw) is "too bright" for that time - vocals of the era never had that high end (which makes this stand out as being "modern recording"). The other is the word "cents"...I think it would feel much more "authentic" if it were "a hundred pennies".
Really enjoyed this. Great job!

Don't be so harsh on yourself about your vocals. I think you underestimate your abilities. I think the vocals sound really fantastic with this style of song, and I can totally feel the Sinatra feel. The lyrics also really suit this style as well. I could totally see it being from that era of singers. They had this way of making sadder topics sound lighter, as if easier to swallow the real heaviness behind the emotions. You've achieved this quite expertly. You did a fantastic job! Thanks for the share!
Cheers, Ember

Great crooner tune. Could definitely have seen someone like Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin singing this in their hay day.

I have said this in the past but really puts a smile on my face when I am thinking how easily you slip in and out of the different genres with such ease. I thought this was an awesome vocal. Just fits this style of music so well. Well done...

fj Hi Floyd. Glad you basically liked it. And I fully agree that "pennies" is much better than "cents" - good catch! When you say the vocal is a little too bright, do you mean too much treble, too "cheery", or too loud? Or maybe more than one of those? It's no big deal to re-sing it. I, personally, think it might be a little too forward in the mix. I have two other mixed with the vocal less forward but it tends to get lost on the horns on occasion. Perhaps I could put a little more compression on the horns. I hesitate to do that as the horns tend to be very temperamental to compression as they lose their tonal brilliance. I could try to redo the horn and then do some manual adjustments on the horns tracks. If you'd care to offer nay suggestions, I'm open to them! And thanks for the observations. Have a great weekend. Alan

Thanks for the share! Hi Ember, Thank you so much - those are very kind words! I don't have a good singing voice other than it's almost ok for smooth jazz and smooth r&b. I'm glad it works for you on this one. And yes, songwriting was much different the,. The 1950s are often referred to "The era of good feeling". WW ll was over, Korea had somewhat resolved. Everything was calm and cheerful. I'm delighted you enjoyed it. Thanks again. Best to you and your PG Music colleagues. Alan

Alan Too much treble - which also is giving the sense that the vocal is "too forward". If you roll off the high end (quite a bit, I think), you will get a sound more like the crooner songs. Don't touch those horns - they are perfect!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
