Okay, I wrote that it "just stopped," when actually I don't know exactly when it did. But I was using Scrub Mode happily just two days ago, but now, zip. This is a handy feature to have. I like it and I use it a lot.

So here's what I've tried. When I first tried it tonight, like about a half-hour ago, I got nothing. The notes change color as if they're being played, but no sound. So, I made sure I was in an editable mode, which I was. I was in Editable Notation Mode, to be precise. So I tried the Staff Roll Notation Mode. No difference. I was working on the chords for one of the rhythm instruments, so I wondered if this mode was something that worked only with the Melody and Solo instruments. So I clicked on the Melody instrument and gave the Scrub Mode button another try. Nope, nothing. Next, I called up another song file -- pretty much at random. Set the melody to Editable Notation Mode, then tried the scrub button on it. Nothing.

Okay, so I call up Preferences/Notation and have a look around. I couldn't find anything that seemed to pertain to scrub mode. So next I call up the Help documentation, do an Index search on Scrub Mode. GOT NO HITS. Oh, it's in there -- I found a few words mentioning it under Editable Notation. But that was all -- a few words. I learned more about it reading the pop up that pops up when I move the mouse cursor over the Scrub symbol.

So I exited from BiaB entirely, then rebooted the program. Tried a couple of songs at random. Still, I wasn't able to get Scrub to work.

Next, I shut down the computer. Let it rest a minute. Then after the computer's back up, I load BiaB and try again. Still nothing. Okay, so I'm out of stuff to try and get it back to working the way it was just a couple days ago.

Oh, I also just realized that the program isn't making any sounds when I'm editing the music. I'm used to hearing a note change pitch when I move it up and down the staff. None of that is happening either. So it's like the whole editing thing is out of whack I guess. Not just Scrub.

So, where can I look? I probably hit something accidentally that shut it off. But what?

And I swear, if this program makes a liar out of me again, I'm gonna delete it from my hard drive and try to forget I'd ever even heard of it. Oh wait -- it was Real Band that made a liar out of me. SO BiaB is safe -- for now.

HI Michael
As it is more a case of not hearing things than the scrub mode itself.
Have you checked the basics haven’t changed like
Audio drivers slipping into Was
And use VST/DXI Synth

Hey Mike -- that's the thing. I'm getting normal playback of my BiaB files. It's just when I enter the notation edit mode that there's no sound. And these are just straight up MIDI instruments I'm trying to edit. Not Real Tracks, not audio. No VSTis, no DXis. Just regular old general MIDI.

I just tried an instrument using the Aria Sforzando DXi -- or is Aria a VSTi? And then I removed it so it would be general MIDI to see if it would matter. It didn't make a difference.

I'd call Tech Support about this, but I guess they're not gonna be back until Tuesday.

Maybe this will help clarify.

sforzando relies on the same ARIA Engine that powers the ARIA Player from Garritan and Plogue chipsounds. This player is a VSTi plugin on Windows for BIAB.

However, the sound synth does not change the fact that BIAB is employing GM for all its instruments. When you "removed Sforzando"as the assigned synth, what do you use to replace it - something else was providing the sound? Perhaps what you have discovered is that while all midi sound synths are not created equal, not all sound that much different than each other.

You said you aren't using any DXi / VSTi etc.... what *are* you using for MIDI playback?

Try using WAS as your audio driver type. Also, click on the Audio Drivers button in Audio Settings and make sure "output always on" is selected. WAS will solve most of these types of problems.

Thanks for the tip, Dan. I unchecked "Use VSTi/DXi Synth" in the MIDI/Audio Driver Setup window. But "no MIDI/Sound Output" was also indicated, so the only sound I got when I played back the tune was the RealDrums, which aren't MIDI. So I clicked on MS Wavetable to make it the default synth, and when I did this, I got my MIDI sounds back, plus Scrub worked.

Andrew, thanks for joining in. For Audio Driver Type, the selections available are MME and ASIO only. No WAS. I have it set to MME currently. I did as you recommended, though, and clicked on "Output Always On."

Well, I've deleted a bunch of stuff I'd written after still not being able to get Scrub to work except with MS Wavetable.

Now, thanks to your directions, Andrew, Scrub is working even with VSTi's and DXi's. What, was it "output always on" that did the trick? MS GS Wavetable is still showing as the default synth, but right now I have Sforzando/Aria set up for the Melody instrument and I'm getting its sound patches, plus Scrub is now working, and its sound output is the same as Sforzando/Aria's.

So, mission accomplished. Problem solved and all that.

Wait a minute - if you have no WAS driver, then this can’t be BIAB 2018. What version is it?

I never said it was BiaB 2018. I haven't upgraded yet; I'm still running v2017. I regret to say that, this time of year, spending priorities lie elsewhere and I cannot afford to take advantage of PGM's special discount for v2018.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
