I wonder if anyone here can help me quickly find the style that comes closest to Bill Frisell's recorded version of 'Just Like A Woman'?
I'll be playing the guitar, so I only need Bass and Drums. Electric bass. Brushes on drums. The song has a 6/8 feel.
When I filter the styles on 'Just Like A Woman' I get hundreds of styles and none of the ones I have listened to have come even remotely close to what I'm after.
This should be simple!
TIA

I only get 58 styles when I type in "just like a woman" and press enter (#1 on below image).
Just to check...
Did you make sure that sure that the "Include similar" (#2 on image) is not selected?
Also, don't worry if the time signature says 4/4 or 12/8, at a slow tempo with the SW (swing) feel, 4/4 can have a 6/8 feel since swing feels are based on triplet 1/8th notes.
I wonder if the problem stems from there being so many performances of this song far more popular than Bill Frisell, such as Bob Dylan and Nina Simone.

Well, if PG Music was trying to gear their version close to the original that would certainly make sense.
The thing is, the bass/drums 'sound' that Frisell has on his recording is not 'Just Like A Woman'-unique. It can be found on hundreds of recordings.
IOW I don't need a 'Just Like A Woman' groove per se. I just need the bass sound + the brush drum sound. I hope I'll be able to solve this fairly soon.

I listened to two versions by Bill. Both are basically solo guitar. Do you really need bass and drums?
Hi Ray. I certainly can play the tune as a solo and with a band. I'd like to come up with a demo that would sound much fuller with bass and drums. This is the sound I'm going after... (bass/drums)
You can always build your own style with your choice of bass and drums. Just pick a style that is close (at least tempo, time signature) then click in the bass track of the mixer and audition the bass players. Pick a favourite. Then do the same for the drums.
Now you can mute the other tracks if you want, and click the Style Maker's top hat on the top menu and save current instruments as a style.
You can keep tweaking it if you want. evenuall you want to get it into the style picker by clicking the rebuild button at the bottom of the page and selecting Complete rebuild.
sounds complicated, but it really is pretty straight forward.

Thanks very much Dave for this tip! I always knew that custom styles were possible, but years ago when I tried messing around with them I didn't get too far (mostly midi stuff).
I will definitely give them another shot using the info you provided and hopefully can come up with something closer to what I have in mind.
Just to be clear, in addition to choosing my fav bass/drum players can I also tell BIAB how I want them to play on say, beat 4 of the second bar, etc.?

Not really. Real tracks are recorded audio, so you get whatever was played. Unless you freezze a track, it will be somewhat different next time you generate. That's what BIAB does. Unless you edit tracks externally, in realband for instance, you get a new variation each time.
Some users want to get exact, or very close copies of a backing track, but others, like me, just need the band to show up on time, play on key and at the right tempo. To each his own. I like the flexibility, others, not so much.

+1.
I count myself a big Bill Frisell fan. Can't say I would want to show up at a bar and see you cop one of his tunes note for note. It just doesn't seem in the spirit of his music. Even he doesn't play the song the same way twice.
For me, his music shows me new things I can do with melody and harmony in the spontaneous moment. Watch how he plays. He's thinking and experimenting all the time. He's truly an amazing guitar player to take such seemingly simple melodies and make them sing like he does.
If you have time check out "the Advancing Guitarist" by Mick Goodrick. It will give you some great ideas that seem very consistent with his playing
That being said, when I play one of his songs (I have about 5 in my rep now) I do play some homage licks (like I do with Wes, Santana, Allman, Hendrix, etc). Respect, not robot is my mantra.

Thanks Mrgeeze. First, this backing track will not be used live, it would just be part of a demo, if used at all.
And it's quite a leap to go from faithful BASS/DRUM backing tracks to note-for-note guitar playing! That's not my bag. I always put my personal stamp on my guitar performances.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
