Newegg has this refurbished 3TB HD on sale. I know Newegg is a reputable company but I know nothing about Hitachi drives or any refurbished HD. So are Hitachi HDs good drives and are refurbished HDs safe to use? Note that I would use these drives in my music computer.

Thanx in advance for your time.

Ive used Hitachi drives. They were fine. I haven’t had that brand in several years though.

I’m more concerned about what Newegg has become. It was always top notch but now it’s like Amazon, using all these third party vendors. My recent Newegg order of motherboard, CPU and RAM came from three different vendors! One ‘forgot’ my order. Another claimed they shipped but their tracking number said it was never shipped. It took five weeks to get all three parts that I should have had in four days. The CPU, while it worked, came in a plain box, not Intel’s normal packaging. Scary.

Hitachi had a partnership with IBM for many years. IBM designed the controller chips while Hitachi made the hardware.

Hitachi is the primary hard drive supplier for my former employer. They subject computer parts to pretty extensive testing and closely monitor failure rates so I'd trust it.

I prefer refurbished to new because: 1) refurbished costs less 2) has been more thoroughly tested and 3) more likely to have been "burned in" to get past the high failure rate that happens within the first 72 hours of initial start up.

An online vendor I've used in the past is +++ Tiger Direct +++ .

Good suggestion, Tiger Direct. I used to use them before Newegg. I plan to go back next purchase (see rant, above) and see if they do the same nonsense.

I am a Western Digital guy. 2nd choice is Seagate. They all perform well, until they don't. Hard drive, IMHO, is the one area you don't want to skimp on. The CPU may be the brain of the computer, but the "heart drive", as I once had a customer so perfectly call it, is what sends that brain all the thoughts to process.

Western Digital is also great if there does happen to be a problem.

And again, IMHO, I would never buy a refurbished hard drive. Remember, it failed once already. If the platter was bad, they'd throw it away. If it was the controller, they slap a new one in without doing much in the way of checking why the controller went out. But as always, not my money, not my computer, just my opinion. I prefer 10,000 RPM drives anyway.

I am using the new 1040XTRAEZ form this year. It has just 2 lines.

1. How much did you make in 2023?
2. Send it to us.

...and New Egg usually warranties stuff the same for refurbs as it does for new equipment.

Thanx all for your responses.

Matt, I didn't know that about Newegg so thanx for that info. I haven't purchased anything from them in years. I've used Tiger Direct many times though. Based on my purchases Tiger Direct has not gone the Newegg route.

Eddie, I have a 1TB Western Digital black drive as my C drive in my music computer.

I could not find out via a web surf if Hitachi HDs are still made. That based on all of your info I think I will pass on this deal and at a later date buy 2 WD black drives.

Thanx again for your time and responses.

In no way a criticism or a directive, but my policy would be to never use a refurbished drive.

If the drive fails while under warranty, they replace the drive. How much does it cost to replace your data?

Everyone will have a turn at one or more drive failures in their computing lifetime. I wouldn't want to be in a hurry to be at the head of the queue.

New data storage has never been cheaper. But, as they say: YMMV (and that's OK too).

My 2 cents.

Mario, there are some computer parts I might buy refurbished, but as Trevor says, hard drives are not one of them.

For anyone reading, I should point out about NewEgg that the fine print does say that the products I purchased would be from third parties. I went back to confirm that. It is this practice I don't like, not NewEgg itself IF you can buy and ship directly from NewEgg. Nevertheless, I never had a bad experience from Tiger Direct so I think I'll give them a try. And yes, I did share my surprised dissatisfaction with NewEgg.

I fear that these shippers will be using 3rd parties more often in the future. Seems to be the thing.

As far as Amazon and New Egg, you usually have a choice in your searches to pick the main company-only results. I usually stick with those and avoid 3rd parties if I can.

Luckily I haven't had an issue like Matt's though. That sounds awful.

Good shopping folks!

I’ll be much more careful in the future. I was fooled by Newegg’s past excellent record.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
