Weeds

Whatever happened to getting muddy, smashing things up in the woods and kids getting into mischief in general? If my 9yr old & his buddies are representative, its been replaced by blowing up digital cyborgs on Xbox and watching 30 something Youtube "stars" prattle on while blowing up cyborgs.
Its weird to find yourself wishing your boy got into a little more trouble.Thinking along those lines led to this.. if you listen and figure , nah, just another bluegrass tune, make sure you make it to the Grandpa rap section!

Weeds

some kids are wallflowers
sweet peas and orchids
tell `em they`re nice they`re pretty
everyday to their face

us kids are dandelions
poison ivy skunk cabbage
its true we admire
our own disgrace

come home battered dishevelled tattered
got you baffled jamming tailpipes with crabapples
creeping spies with moss green eyes
we vine and shine through cracks in the dark
do our mud dreads impress we`re not your bright sparks
we are the weeds you`ll know us by our deeds

weeds weeds growing wild
from respectable seeds

we`re the raggabrash chorus
not your choir of angels
fix our hair for Sunday
find sticks and bugs wings

we howl from the hollows
turn your house to a wasteland
climb up to bed
sleep the sleep of blessed things

knock the brains outta words bring the worst to church
like a stone in your shoe we got the measure of you
there`s no foolin rats in a ruin
you`re watching shows `bout sex drugs and money
you`re Tom I`m Jerry not your Little Bunny
we are the weeds you`ll know us by our deeds

weeds weeds growing wild
from respectable seeds
thorns`n thistles that`s our creed

Nice bluegrass groove.

Personally, I had a hard time hearing the vocals. They're a bit buried in the mix.

Well! I'd call that a bluegrass stream-of-consciousness work! Love how you worked in the granddad rap, the spoken/whispered words near the end--the way the whole thing varied was very interesting. The melody line was also creative enough that it wasn't predictable. And overall the production was nice (probably agree with the vocal level as noted above).

Get those boys outside playing!!

Thanks for the comment-I agree vocals were too far back. Should be better now.

Robert,

I really like the way you approached this song. Great message and something a bit dark bubbling underneath the bluegrass backing...

Excellent - really enjoyed this song.

That sort of defies easy categorization. Interesting and complex - looked up Raggabrash
(A disorganized or grubby person) never heard that one before.
As always your work is stimulating.

Very nice, Robert! Creative as always.

Love the rap bit. Lots of great lines, I think my favorite is:

"knock the brains outta words bring the worst to church
like a stone in your shoe we got the measure of you"

Mix sounds good too.

Robert,

As always, an interesting, unique lyric. Descriptive and visual.

And, this time, an interesting, unique musical style to go along.

Bluegrass Poetic Rap.

Cool.

I quite enjoyed this Robertkc! The bluegrass vibe is prominent and the lyrics are captivating to a simpler time. Thanks for sharing!

This is so different from anything I’ve ever heard that it is a genre unto itself. The free flowing poetry jam mixed with the bluegrass backing is truly unique. I enjoyed my listen and you reminded me of my childhood when I gone from the house except for meals and sleep. It’s a different world for kids now. Good job, Tom

Thank you - grandad rap parts are mixed higher now ( my boy said he couldn`t hear them well enough to give me an opinion... very diplomatic!).

Bob,
I remember my own subversive inner kid well so I`m happy you heard that in the song.
Thanks for your kind comments.

Robert, was this ever a cool song. First I just loved the banjo and dobro. The Grandpa rap that made me chuckle. This was so creative. Super vocal and harmonies. I love the Blue Grass mixed with some very different music. I agree with Tom that this is a genre all by itself. Like I said very creative.... Well done!!!

That was... different. As Tom said, sort of like walking through someone's subconscious.

Neat! laugh

Robertkc,

This is an ambitious tune. For my tastes, there’s perhaps a bit too much going on musically, and as others have noted, the sound seems to diminish the vocal and ultimately the lyric. I’d be tempted to slow this down some. That aside, from a production standpoint, you’ve introduced a nice variety of instruments that compliment the tune—just some fine tuning on the mix and pace might do it for me. Just one (not so talented) guy’s opinion for you to use or lose, respectfully. Keep working it!

Best regards,

Deej

A fine use of the washboard real drums track. I think this is the first I've heard someone use it.

Thanks the kind comments Floyd,
I wasn`t going to post this, but with all the chat about modern music I thought what the heck... perhaps not my finest 3 minutes, but a fun foray into new territory nonetheless.

Tom,
I`m pleased you got the intention behind the song; thanks very much for the thumbs up
I heard the rap sections might fit and wrote them out same time as the bluegrass song... then thought "have I just invented a new genre?" Turns out these guys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAgVPEmf2ws&index=0&list=RDkAgVPEmf2ws
have been there for a few years... with real rappers of course.

Hello, Robert

Very unique sound!
Surely it is bluegrass style, but something is different.
You always add another flavor to the traditional sound.
But that is always comfortable.
This song is no exception.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

As fj said: "Bluegrass Poetic Rap."

As Tom said: "This is so different from anything I’ve ever heard that it is a genre unto itself."

As Tano said: "Well! I'd call that a bluegrass stream-of-consciousness work!"

Man, you never get into a rut do you? This is remarkably creative...something we would never imagined much less tried to execute.
And you made it into a "song" -- much, much more than a curiosity.

Great write and performance also!

Very entertaining.

J&B

My subconscious; a scary place, with a lot of rhymes that won`t shut up!

Deej,
Points taken - if there were a separate forum to post " musical experiments", I would have put this there. Maybe I`ll get back to this and think about the mix again- no doubt it could be improved. To my ears, after the fact, some of the rap phrases sound rushed, so maybe that`s what you hear in the tempo.
Thanks for taking the time to listen and share your impressions.

Samuel & David, glad you liked that washboard... it was fun hearing it going with the beatscratch track.

Shigeki,
I have a feeling its my lack of musical education that leads me mix up the genres!

J&B,
My fear of ruts keeps me going... or maybe each song is a new rut I`m stuck in for two weeks!

Sergio,
" Nice and strange" - I`ll take that. Your new instrumental is so good!

Thanks to all having a listen to my experiment.

Robert,

With this song, I believe a new sub-genre of sorts has been born! The song is very engaging and interesting as well as entertaining! You always present great material here! Thanks, Torrey

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
