Trying to install 2018 UltraPAK to run from USB drive (not enough free space on main drive).

Installer fails with following:
D:\bb\Data\Util\CDRipperX.ocx
An error occurred while trying to create a file in the destination directory.
The media is write protected.

After you try to Abort the installation the installers run anyway and copy about 1GB worth of WAV stuff into "Program Files" folder.

So basically sev 1 and sev 2 defects.
How on Earth is it possible for test team at PG Music to miss those issue?

Hi woland99,

The minimal installer is meant for use with the UltraPak that's purchased from PG Music on a USB drive.

With the UltraPak on the the supplied USB drive, it's ready to go once the "Minimal Install" is run to set up Windows for BIAB. The BIAB program then runs entirely from the USB drive.

Is this how you used the minimum install?

Regards,
Noel

Correct - I run Setup and chose option #1 "run from USB drive".

Permissions problems; first think i would try is run take ownership on the folder you're addressing, LINK: take ownership , a registry tweak ...., or the easy way: download a right click registry entry here : takeownership.zip

Note: if you do the hack just kinked by Fiddler2007, read the whole article first to see that you can do it manually, or if you go to the link at the bottom, you can download an EXE to do it for you!

I followed the directions and successfully added 'Take Ownership' to both file and folder menus.
Running installer now....
Got exactly same error:
Installer fails with following:
D:\bb\Data\Util\CDRipperX.ocx
An error occurred while trying to create a file in the destination directory.
The media is write protected.

OK so Abort and letsee if I can take ownership of D:\bb\Data\Util\
No I cannot same error on second run.

What he said. We should have asked this first.

Just to clarify...

...by "running as administrator", fiddler and Matt mean "did you right-click on the installer file and choose 'run as administrator'?"

This is different than logging into Windows as an administrator. The right-click "run as admin" option gives the installation file privileges that logging into Windows does not make available.

What he said. We should have asked this first.

Yes I did (at first). I do not remember if I was running as admin after taking ownership. Will try again. BTW - PGMusic tech guy suggested ignoring the error b/c CDRipper is non essential.

I also think that there should be an option to install at location of your choice - external or internal. No just supplied USB or C:\.

Thanks for this information. I was wondering about that because I've never once used the CD Ripper in BIAB.

You can install BIAB on any drive you want. You can even install the program on one drive, the fonts on your boot drive, and the RealTracks and/or RealDrums on a third drive. My boot drive is drive C, the BIAB program is on drive F and my RealTracks are on drive G.

About the only place you shouldn’t install BIAB is to the /Program Files folder of your boot drive. That will cause headaches.

Hi Woland99,

You'd actually never install onto the USB drive, the program is already there and doesn't need to be installed again.

Installation option #1 just installs notation fonts, plugins, and the Hi-Q sounds to the C drive, and doesn't install Band-in-a-Box at all (since it's already installed to the USB drive).

Installation options #2 installs the fonts, plugins, and Hi-Q sounds to the C drive, and installs Band-in-a-Box (without RealTracks) to whatever drive you like.

Installation options #3 installs the fonts, plugins, and Hi-Q sounds to the C drive, and installs Band-in-a-Box (with RealTracks) to whatever drive you like.

Thanks
Kent

Unfortunately that did not help a lot - installer finished indeed but
the app cannot start for the same reason - media is write protected.
I cannot copy anything onto that drive and when it tries to set some data
files during the first run it crashes immediately:
Exception EFCreateError in module bbw.exe at 00025A9E.
Cannot create file D:\bb\Data\DrumVideosFound.txt".
The media is write protected.

I think PGMusic owes me an explanation. This is obviously a hardware issue.

It seems that it is possible after all to install BIAB on another USB drive - I am attempting to do that now. Installation doc could have been a bit clearer. I think that should fix the problem. I assigned high letter to that drive just in case I have several devices already connected.
Same installer errors about CDRipper.ocx popped up and I ignored them.
We shall see in couple hours if installation succeeded.

SUCCESS - this time installer worked and app seems to work so far - need to
do some post-installation setup and hopefully revive my old collection BIAB
tunes.

Thanks for help and encouragement everybody!
Now onward to better musicianship (hopefully... cool)

When you run BIAB, right-click on the shortcut and select "Run as administrator". PG Music recommend that both BIAB and Realband are run in administrator mode.

This can be set permanently by right-clicking on the startup shortcut, selecting "Properties" and then, under the "Compatibility" tab, activating "Run as administrator".

Regards,
Noel

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
