Thanks for your thoughts Tony! I had not even thought about things like tempo. But I guess it should ignore tempo and also ignore key as there would be no need to transpose crowd noise.

I have looked around for a VSTi of crowd noise but have not found anything. And the samples and loops all have the problem of either repeating or being mismatched (one sample has 12 people and the next one has 1200...one was recorded through the mixing board and the next one by a handheld at a table!)

I think BIAB would be the perfect place to have such a tool since it is already matching up various tracks and fitting them together. But maybe it would be something that could work in the DAW as well.

If I could buy this as a BIAB add-on or even a VSTi or Kontakt library I'd grab it in a heartbeat!

An interesting request (and thread)...

A thought...

Wouldn't this be better done using Loops? Loops can be any length, so they would not necessarily sound like they are being repeated (if long enough to begin with). You would only need short ones for intros - and relatively short ones for endings. Plus, the number of variables to crowds - size, enthusiasm, cheering? jeering? laughter? etc. would make producing a RealTrack difficult (I think). One shot Loops would be much simpler - you could even ask forums members to supply them and gather tham all in one place for download - or as PG to include them in the next release.

It is not that hard to find sources to grab a sample of your own making. There are thousands (millions) of videos on YouTube with every kind of audience sounds one could ever need. Find what you need and capture it in a DAW.

That is what I did for the song "Take Me Drunk".
A BUNCH of people from this forum supplied tracks of singing the final chorus.
But the crowd applause at the end (the last 15 seconds) was mostly captured from YouTube videos - with the exception of Bud yelling "more beer!"...

Thanks Floyd. Yes, it is absolutely possible to do this like you describe. It is also possible to play all the instruments on our songs. Don't need BIAB at all! But doing it manually...playing all instruments or sourcing/creating/assembling crowd noise from an erratic collection online...is tedious and time consuming to say the least.

As stated before, the stuff online is short and inconsistent in recording quality, audience size, etc. Doing it manually for even one song would be a pain in the butt. For an album? Fuggedaboudit!

On the other hand imagine being able to add a crowd track to your BIAB songs and do minor tweaking and then output tracks that sound like legit live sessions. To me that would be awesome.

A bit snarky, don't you think?

The main intent of my post was that this is more a Loops thing than a RealTracks thing. Not that you should do it manually. That was merely another suggestion.

And that with very little effort, you might enlist the help of others (on these forums) to collect a large amount of those Crowd Loops.

Maybe a bit. It just seems kinda obvious to me that someone could do this by scrounging up enough bits and pieces and loops and tediously assemble them into a coherent crowd simulation, song by song. But having something like this integrated into the tool I am using, BIAB, would make it far easier. Just like having guitars and pianos and drums in BIAB make song production far easier.

Sorry to have started a heated discussion but I feel that online there are any amount of “Applause” and “Crowd Noise” sound files in various formats from 1 person clapping to crowds of 1000s. They last from several seconds to over an hour. The come in wav, flac, MP3 and other formats.

I would have thought simply adding a wav or flac to the appropriate part in the song would be more efficient and practical than having a track in BB used up by something that would be added for a few bars at most. I can’t imagine anyone using an “Applause” RealTrack for the entire song or even half a song.

I would rather use RealTracks for music and instrument bits that I cannot necessarily play. I really don’t see anyone saying I wish they’d clap in Cmb7 or a 122 beats per minute but I can imagine someone doing this or similar on piano.

To me this idea defeats the purpose of Realtracks. I really feel PG could spend time on better endeavours. But that is just me.

I can imagine the outcry as you fade out the last few bars, and slow down to a heart felt ending only to have the applause slow down and fade out with you rather than reaching a fever pitched frenzy.

However I’m “lucky” I just had a look and I have several lots of canned Applause on Dimension Pro so I could simply add a midi track if I desired. But even then I’d reckon it would be easier and I’d have better options and better results loading an appropriate wav file.

While I have acknowledged you don't need tempo and key for crowd sounds you do need these to be in place and managed throughout a song. There are ambient room sounds that must be consistent throughout a song track otherwise it sounds exactly like you just added a crowd cut at the beginning and end. So this needs to be fairly consistent from beginning to end with at least an occasional rise and dip at various points in the song.

And every clip or loop you use must be sonically similar to one another. Affecting this will be room characteristics, crowd size, type of recording that was made, sound levels, etc. They don't have to be perfect but they have to be convincing enough that you don't hear something wrong with it.

Then, after doing a single song this way, you have to do another 11 or so crowd sound tracks if you are making an album and you don't want to have the same guy screaming "Freebird" in every song!

Also, just because there are recordings to be found on the internet doesn't mean you have the right to just take them and use them in your recordings. Unless they are specifically licensed for your use they cannot be used.

And while I still believe this is a Very Good BIAB Wishlist request/suggestion, assuming like many other requests it is highly unlikely to be considered, I would welcome a resource if anyone knows of one where there are 1) enough similar sounding crowd loops 2) yet with enough variety so they don't sound the same, 3) that are licensed for use in this way, 4) to do an entire album!
