I'm posting this kind of in response to the "why midi" thread. The original "solo" (created by BIAB melodist) was actually a different instrument altogether (vibes, I think) that I patched into a trumpet in the Kurz. I eliminated the double-stops, edited some notes and durations, and added some trills here and there in piano roll, and I think the trumpet, though it might not fool a trumpet player, sounds as good as a real one to the casual listener.

On the other hand, the strummed guitar doesn't sound as good. It's all about the sounds with midi, but coaxing the performance you want out of a midi track is not that difficult. If I can do it, most anybody can.

The original style was:

Style is MILESFNK.STY (Miles Slow Funk (Fusion)

I added 2 RealDrums tracks to the formerly "final mix", sp I guess this one is the new final mix. Unfortunately, I've lost the BIAB files to say which RD's I used, but both were 16th jazz drums playable at this very slow tempo. I used two because I'm fond of busy drums, and neither was exceptionally loud.

Bittersweet 16

Another advantage to midi in this piece was that it gave me the jazz chords I asked for. The keyboards also delivered a melodic riff that the trumpet could play against.

I hope you enjoy. Try not to fall asleep listening.

Midi is essential for all those reasons of control that you mentioned...you just have to live with the instrument sound short-comings. I also do as you have—see if another midi instrument can be used that avoids the “trying to sound real” problems. I’ve tried to solve that also by doubling, sometimes tripling the sounds on that channel, trying to get to a unique sound palette to keep the listener from focusing on the not-quite-real midi sound of the base instrument. And there’s also that jazz chord thing, sometimes you just need to enter it yourself to get the extensions you want. Interesting exercise here working with all those issues and getting a pretty good result.

Wow - really nice job! You really flexed your muscles on the MIDI work here. It flows tremendously well, and the mixing job is crisp and professional. I definitely didn't come anywhere near falling asleep, haha.

Thanks so much for sharing smile

No zzzzzz's here. I always enjoy the backstory. I understand from a broad perspective what and how you accomplished it but it's something I could never execute - don't think I have the ear for it. Comping up RT solos is my limit.

Your work certainly resulted in a composition that rather than making one sleepy begs additional listens.

Classy and sophisticated come to mind.

Nice!!!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
