The House Of Long Tomorrows

My wife`s 50th birthday approaches - I thought she might enjoy a song about beginnings.Raised ( like so many Thai kids) by her grandmother, she likes to tell tales about their nighttime food foraging and all the tough love. The last verse is a little cryptic, but hopefully she`ll get it.
I`ve listened some to the recent forum songs as a welcome refresher from the full-on fun of doing up a CD;good to hear there`s no reduction in the quality on display!

The House Of Long Tomorrows

three girls fit on a bicycle
one to pedal
one to steer you can hold the umbrella

hurry home from school little Laa
its almost monsoon
tonight we`ll hunt frogs by the light of the moon

you`ll sing me that song
your songs are the dreams I see through
to the house of long tomorrows

nearly an orphan such a tomboy
maybe you can fly
put on this dress dropkick the sky

ask the rich lady about the Eiffel Tower
today you`re a Christian
try to sing words you don`t understand

sing me that song
your songs are the dreams I see through

to a steaming green land
full of glory winged bugs
sweet bamboo sighs
there`s only good luck
your father and mother`s
flip flops are there
at the door of stories
as many as the creak of the stairs

sing me that song
your songs are the dreams I see through
to the house of long tomorrows
always coming home
to the house of long tomorrows

Sweet present. The style is not only aptly named, but the soft muted click of the guitar is almost a sound-effect in itself...maybe that of the "glory winged bugs" or the flip flops. Coupled with your soft voice, free-form structure and melody, and stream-of-memory lyric this sets such a nostalgic mood.

I'll tell you a quick story about tomboys. Visiting the family home outside Khon Kaen with marrying not really even on my radar, my future wife killed, cleaned and cooked a chicken which an hour before had been happily pecking the ground near my feet, then served me a bowl. What's not to love?

Very, very nice.

Robert,
Exellent gift to your wife and I am sure to most of us here!
Nicely composed and singed!
I enjoyed this a lot. Brings back some good thoughts and images.
I visited Thailand 20 years ago. A very special place.

Thank you for sharing!

A sweet tune and backing - though I'd liked to have seen some variation with that loop - eitehr in & out or up & down.
Very personal narrative.

Great to see a post from you and early b'day wishes to your wife!

"ask the rich lady about the Eiffel Tower
today you`re a Christian
try to sing words you don`t understand"

Whoa! That is POWERFUL.

Gotta mention that Janice and I were working with this style the other night night for a new song...nice isn't it? And you used it to perfection for this song.

The sentiment is wonderful and although obviously quite personal it (and the fine vocal and lyric) will work anybody as the imagery is so rich.

And wrapping it all up is a very pleasing mix that sounds excellent on our monitors.

This is a gift to her and this community!

J&B

PS CD? You know anybody with one of those things that plays them? smile

Hi Robert,

I love the open and uncomplicated sound of the arrangement and its production. It's well planned and is an absolute pleasure to listen to. As is your singing; it is confident and calmly soothing on my ears and sits very comfortably within the mix.

A very enjoyable listen in so many ways.

All the best,
Noel

Hi Robert ...

Your music always such a pleasure to listen to. You have an uncanny skill at crafting a lyric to tell a wonderful story. I can't imagine your wife won't find it anything but touching and beautiful. Happy birthday to her. I remember 50 ... but it was a long time ago!

Kudos for executing a fabulous project!

Scott:Thank you for those positives- and for understanding my hiatus!
Ember: I appreciate your listen.
Tangmo: I really like that muted guitar track ( trying to add an approximation to my own limited playing).
Well that chicken gave its life for a good cause! I hesitated to use the word "tomboy" - as you know it means something different in Thailand, but couldn`t think of another way to describe the little girl I`ve heard about. So glad you enjoyed this.
Rob: Thank you!
Misha: Good to hear you found the images fit your memories of Thailand. Thanks for listening.
RayC: Dropping that percussion down was on my radar at last listening- good comment, thank you!
Dave: Very kind comments- much appreciated.
Bob: Enjoying catching up with your new songs- thanks for your thumbs upon this one.
J&B: Those lines are a big part of my wife`s story ( needing sponsorship to go to school and accepting the church attendance strings attached to be approved... a Buddhist kid with no English singing hymns!). I`m pleased you got into this song.
Look forward to how you`ll use this cool style.
The CD isn`t so much for playing... more an item of curiosity to place in my time capsule!

Thanks to all who find time to listen- I may not comment on your songs of late but still listening as I go.

Robert,

Good to see you back around...

A beautiful song. Well sung - one of your best vocals, I think. Nice harmonies. And an excellent group of instruments and nice mix. I really liked the addition of the "chime" (but I though it was over-used... thought it should have been dropped during the verse...)

Well done.

Love that title!! I think the arrangement is perfect....lots of space for a vocal which is SOOO good. There's a wonderful gentleness in your voice and harmonies are perfect. It seems it's been a while since I saw one of your songs posted. Always enjoy them! This is really good!! Take care. Greg

Beautiful tune Robert! Perfect instrument choices to support those wonderful lyrics! I like the way the chorus changes the musical direction in a very pleasing relaxing way! Thanks, Torrey

The clear and airy vocal is a nice feel and counter to the rhythmic staccato of the guitar. Love the lyrics on this (the English teacher in me always draws me to song lyrics).

Wow - this is stunning, Robert smile A very touching and delicate piece of work. Very easy to close your eyes and get lost to, and it has an almost whimsical sort of charm.

I'm sure your wife will love it - thanks for sharing!

Cheers,
Deryk

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
