Hi folks,

I have just ordered a new computer which will come with windows 7 (32 bit) OEM installed. I am reasonably computer literate.

I will try to add xp as well to make it a dual boot system and maybe even windows 98 that will only play a few old games that I have got.

I have searched on the net about installing earlier windows os after windows 7 and it seems there is a program called easyBCD to download.

1 I wonder if anyone who is familiar with this program can tell me if it works ok and will do as I want i.e. install the earlier version of windows in the partitions on the hard drive that I will create.

2 does easyBCD display a screen at start-up which will display a list of the os installed, or does it just modify the master boot record so that windows will give me list of os?

3 can it be removed easily enough if I decide it’s not for me and is unlikely to damage my copy of windows 7?

4 One further question about easyBCD. As computer will come with windows 7 and then I will install xp, can I set up the computer to boot into windows 7 (default os) without having to manually select windows 7 in the easyBCD os menu or will easyBCD set xp as the default?

I can't use virtual machines as my oem copy of windows 7 doesn't have that option.

Hope someone who has used easyBCD can shed some light on this,

many thanks

I am running a dual boot system with Win 7 64bit and XP 32bit.

I WOULD NOT try to do this without seperate hard drives on each OS. And i definitely wouldn't add Win 98 and add a seperate hard drive just for this. Most games for 98 will run on XP.

My son set it up using EasyBCD and it didn't work properly. He ended up having to wipe all hard drives and start over. Not recommended.

I now have 3 hard drives with Win7 64bit on C, XP 32bit on D, and storage on E.

Options for dual boot come up during startup. Works great.

If you try to do a dual boot on one hard drive, most likely it will screw up your computer. I've been running variations of dual boot for years but it's always been on multiple drives

Also, your dual boot drive has to be a clean install. You can't take one with an old copy and get it to work.

You can however take a drive with an older OS and access the files. (Sometimes you have to "cheat" and trick the main OS). But you can't boot the OS.

It has to be written to the MOBO. And repairs rarely work. Clean install and lost files. Backup before moving any old drives to new 'puter.

Be sure to read some of the forum posts for the most commonly asked questions.

EasyBCD is a program that allows you to set up the Boot Manager and Master Boot Records. Once those are set up, you won't be using it again, unless you wish to change or undo the settings.

I was running dual boot Vista and Win 7, until I tried playing with the GodMode posted elsewhere in the Off Topics forum. Now, I'm using Win 7 to try to recover my data. Silly me.

I'm blessed watching God do what He does best. I've had a few rough years, and I'm still not back to where I want to be, but I'm on the way and things are looking far better now than what they were!

Good link Gary.

I started to try the GodMode too, but I was leary of it. From what I read, it seems it was put in there by Microsoft for Win7 by the developers. Along with several other "GodModes".

It probably wasn't meant for Vista. If misery loves company, I "screwed the pooch" and lost almost all of my data here recently too. All I had was an old backup file.

Luckily Bob, I have a recovery software program, but it's very slow.

I may have all my data recovered by the time I get my copy of Win 7, whenever that will be.

Thanks very much Bob and Gary for your replies. Gary that tutorial is a real find. I had searched the net but couldn't find anything worthwhile but that looks like its the business.

I think it will help a lot of other people too who want to mess with xp on their windows 7 computers, but don't want to format so that xp is installed first.

Thanks again.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
