Windows XP, Build 294 ...

OPTIONS -> PREFERENCES -> DISPLAY ... the option box "New Line for Every Section (Part Maker)" is checked. The main display looks as expected until I identify a repeat. Then the main display behaves as though the box is not checked. This occurs whether I insert the repeat manually or whether BiaB finds it automatically, for example in a standard AABA song form. There are no Part Makers inside the repeated material. The display behavior covers the entire song, not just the portion that has a repeat.

If I use the "Edit Repeats and Endings" dialog to delete all repeats, the display once again starts a new line at every Part Maker.

Is this behavior a bug or is it explained somewhere?

Thanks,

My personal preference actually is to NOT have a new line for each part marker. So, I have it unchecked. In addition to that (as it helps me put more variations other than the standard repetitions of Part A and B (verse/chorus), I unfold all of my projects to make them into one big chorus. I find that I have much more control over what I want the backing track to sound like.

But, that's just me.

Mike

The display has always gotten 'sloppy' when using repeats or 1st/2nd endings. Once they are in, the lines 'disappear'. I only use those when making lead sheets. For performance or practice, I have an unfolded copy with no repeats or endings so the sections are easier to see.

Sorry. I hope someone else knows a way around.

As per my previous post in this thread, Rachael ... seem like, we're working very similar with BIAB.

Yes, the feature to create a new line for new sections (part markers) is, by design, only active when there are no repeats/1st-2nd endings in the song. So when you add them, you won't see a new line for each part marker.

Like Rachael and Mike, I also use a single, unfolded chorus. I find the line breaks are handy visual markers and well-suited to a single chorus.

I use the chorus feature quite a lot.

I also find that the New Line with every Part Marker feature is desirable sometimes when laying out a new song, so I may toggle it ON for that purpose.

But once the song is laid out and I'm done with that part, I usually turn that New Line with Part Marker feature back OFF and save the song that way. It is too cluttered for fast reading when playing along with BB IMO.

Those who use the One Long Song feature all the time will have to manually add part markers to get the B section where they need it. Using the chorus feature I automatically get the Swing feel for the inside choruses, which is what I want most of the time for jazz soloing anyway. Some songs, I invoke the B substyle for both the Melody Head and Tail as well as the middle solo choruses. Works well for certain Bebop and Modern Jazz tunes.

Having this division line is fine when working with a single chorus.
I like to be able to section of feach version, chorus, bridge, inst while roughing out the arrangement.
I only wish it was possible to program drum fills using a and b markers and NOT have a section line created at the fill point.
Keep the current section lines but mark the fills in another way that they won't generate section lines.

Thanks, Peter. The angst is gone. I don't actually print lead sheets using the section-break feature, but I sometimes find it useful for building or understanding structure.

Unless it has changed in 2010, you might be forced to use repeats/tags rather than unfold due to the 255 bar limit. Doesn't happen often, but I have a couple of songs that exceed it if unfolded. I like the drum fill being separate from the new line part markers idea. Would be helpful for me.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
