[Link no longer valid]

A couple years ago I put up a song with a dream sequence that contained an uptempo part that was very short in duration. The song was called "A Day In The Light" which was a co-write with David Snyder (I sure do miss seeing you around here David-The place lost a step when you went quiet) I credit David for the title of this one. This is a re-write of the uptempo part. It's about escaping the pressures and realities of life through dreaming! I wrote the lyrics on the fly today and will certainly want to improve some of them! It's going to take some tweaking but I kind of like it and hope any who listen does also! Thanks for checking it out!

A DAY IN THE LIGHT
Words and music by Torrey Bliss
Copyright 2020

I hear the church bells ringing
The birds are singing
Another day here in the light
Don't interrupt this feeling
I know that I'm dreaming
Don't send me back there to the night
In this place I'm seeing
Everything I believe in
Another day here I'm the light
If I could only take it back with me
A lovely day here in the light

You never know just where you'll go
When you close your eyes
It's when you feel alive
The pain is gone the thrill is on
It's a natural high
I go there every night

In this world I'm seeing
What I just don't believe in
Oh take me back there to the light
What is right is wrong
And what's wrong is right
A downward spiral to the night
I will escape in slumber and close my eyes
And find my way back to the light
If I could only take it back with me
A lovely day there in the light

You never know just where you'll go
When you close your eyes
It's when you feel alive
The pain is gone the thrill is on
It's a natural high
I go there every night

Where will I go I never know
Each time a surprise
When I close my eyes
The pain is gone the thrill is on
It's a natural high
I'm going there tonight

This is really great! It has a late 60's vibe. I liked the groove you have going on and the backing tracks were spot on. Your vocal is really strong on this and your mix was perfect.

There is a lot to be proud of here.

Torrey - it's a cracker.
Pop psych that would sit happily on The Duke's of Stratosphere's album or EP.
Lyrically I don't think you need to tweak anything as it works really well. It's possible to address the double use of light I suppose but it doesn't stick out as a problem at all.
Lovely stuff and an exemplar of using RealTracks and other players together to achieve a coherent and classic song.

Torrey,

Very very pop song!
It's Paul McCarteny.
The combination of Bass and Drums sounds very nice.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Very promising intro raising expectations and then starts the familiar poppy Torrey style smile The positive message makes me forget the Earthly worries. Excellent mix, especially the drums sound great. Vocals and the solo guitar are full of the natural high!

Very nice, Torrey and David, all the way around. I got a picture of that feeling of waking up, looking out the window to see it is a beautiful clear day. Or, day in the life, hey? Then it morphed into something quite profound, which I might call 'Going to the LORD,' that feeling of the last prayer of the day, before inviting the Sand Man in. Fine listen.

They were a side project of XTC. They had songs that didn't fit and they were just for fun pop psych - an album and EP of fun for anyoe who enjoyed pop psych really...

Torrey,

Love that opening into the melody, which is just infectious. It’s got sum a Beetles type sound to me, really engaging, particularly with the back up Vox. Harmonies and solo guitar work. For lyrics written on the fly, solid. Sweet vocal. A winner in my book!

All my best,

Wow! Beatlesque to the max!

Like a lost cut on any of their albums from Rubber Soul on...

The wonder of that is added to by the upbeat positive lyric,
vocal delivery and the overall production.

Your guitar and vocal performances just take it way over the top.

Outstanding!!!

PS: Upon another listen Janice mentioned Pet Sounds...another good thing.

I like this lyric. It's a somewhat skewed take on the preferability of dreams over waking life. The chord work and melody press this home. It's a "happu" vibve, but dark enough to suggest that it really "shouldn't" be this way.

Anyway, that's my take. The groove and band is strong (both the Box and your own work) and it sounds good to me. There may be a hint of "book" in the vocals in a place or two, but I'm listening with volume up and it passes quickly. Much enjoyed this.

Hello Torrey,

You are working very hard these days. Even I have troubles keeping up with your frequency of presenting new songs.
But this one is (also) a very good song that reminded me of the big years of pop. But it weren't the Beatles that came in my mind when listening to your song, but the British group Wham. 'To help you a bit, their most famous song was 'Last Christmas'. Halfway in the song I also heard traces of the Beatles in it. So you have covered multiple artists with this outstanding song.
I couldn't think of any criticism of the song or an instrument. Crazy, huh?
So very well done!

I love the groove and upbeat feel of this! While I'm sure the lyrics could be improved, they worked as far as I was concerned.

The current arrangement is sort of the same throughout the sections, but you've hinted it's a work in progress.

I was hoping you might go "full Beatles" at the end and dissolve into the sound of backwards orchestras.

But minor nits - as usual with your songs, I enjoyed this a lot! laugh

I like the upbeat and bouncy feel that you have created here, Torrey.

It does remind me of the Beatles (Penny Lane), but I think it also has a slight flavour of the Beach Boys. There's definitely a late 60's vibe to it.

Torrey (and David),
Super creative tune. Seems a lot of hard labor and soul went into it. Arrangement is very complex, I had to listen to this tune several times on different occasions, to grasp it smile

Hi Torrey,

you're making it harder with every song ypu post to find words of excitement I haven't written before.

This one is a masterpiece - no doubt about that.

A masterpiece for so many reasons, but what it did to me was open 'The Sixties Book' - so many memories so cleverly and so freshly put together - no idea how you can, but you did it again.

What a crazy idea to start a song called "A Day In the Light" with a citation of that chaotic ending of "A Day In The Life". Again Wishbone Ash's double guitar playing appeared on my inside screen and - what a pleasure to be reminded on them - The Move heck: Who remembers "Wild Tiger Woman"? Beatles anyway - please, Torrey, don't get me wong, when I mention all these: By no means do I think you're copycatting - on the contrary: I think you have a miraculous gift of soaking in the musical highlights of the past and turning them into something really new and exclusively 'torrey-ish'.

In German we have a popular saying roughly translated by : 'That's really big cinemal'. And, yes, Torrey, that's what it is: big cinema!-

Love it,

Stefan

Thanks David for the listen and comments! I considered altering the arrangement a tad but choose to keep it in a uniform pattern throughout because of the short length of the actual music section of the song (excluding the intro and ending). I also thought about reversing the audio on the end and that is still an option! T

Torrey,
Crackling with energy from that great intro- I knew I was in for a treat!
I like the style links to the period and your vocal is very good ( one of your best, I think). The song is infectious and lyrics swirl around with the good feelings (sound fine as is).
Will David hear this and come back to find out how many others miss him around here?

Hi Torrey (and the elusive David Snyder),

This is a wonderful listen.

The introduction really grabbed hold of me and captured my imagination very strongly.

I'm listening on speakers right now and this is such a professional sound.... confident, balanced, vibrant and very enjoyable to listen to.

Somehow this arrangement reminded me of both the Beachboys and The Beatles simultaneously. I don't know how you did that but it was so effective. I went and had a listen to "Wouldn't It Be Nice" by the Beachboys and "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" by The Beatles just to confirm that I wasn't hearing things.

You're a clever arranger, Torrey!

You won me! (Again)

All the best,
Noel

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
