STOICSTOIC HiQ RecommendedHere's something a bit different...and I hope an enjoyable trip. This started out as midi with tracks run through my Kurzweil synth module. I knew, weirdo that I am, that I had to do a number in 24/16, even though I can't count that high. For the longest time it existed as essentially a bass solo with backing, and I enjoyed listening to it from time to time when that kind of mood struck. But it always needed something, so I contacted ScottC on the off chance he might want to contribute. My friends, contribute he did. I can't imagine it any more without his delicious lines, tone, and feel. He confessed to be daunted in the beginning, but he relaxed into it and delivered mightily. I'll let him comment on his own guitars and gear. This project was allot of fun. When Tangmo sent me the first mp3 I was quite taken with the rhythm and the infectious bass line of the song. First couple of attempts to play along were a bit frustrating but the hook got planted in my head and I was humming it all day long. Then quicky things started to fall together.
I used two different Les Pauls to get the different tones. One has P90's in it and is very raw. I also used an SG for the slide track. I also used a Marshall amp and two Eventide H9 effects pedals..
The guitar parts were mixed in Studio One.. Scott also guided me on the mix, but since he has no remote control over my fingers, I'll take ultimate credit/blame. I suggest you listen not-too-loud. Mixed in Reaper with basic EQ's and compressors, and a master in Ozone. I hope you are also capable of that kind of mood and can dig this as much as we ultimately did ****** Song Summary ************* Title: Stoic Key=Am ( Maybe?) , Tempo 50, Length (m:s)=4:18 4 bar intro, 37 bar chorus, from bar 5 to bar 41. Repeat x2 choruses Style is 2416VISH.STY (24/16 Vishnu - Fusion - About Ti) Style MIDI Instruments are : Fretless Elec. Bass (36), Electric Piano 2 (6), Clean Electric Guit (28), Pad-Poly Synth (91), RealDrums will be substituted :2416Fusion: a: 2416Fusionb: 2416Fusion Scott on lead guitars and slide ******************* EDIT: Soundcloud has never squashed an .mp3 as much as they did this one. I was very disappointed after finally listening to it myself, so the .wav file has been uploaded. If you have the bandwidth, I'd suggest the HiQ version.

WOW! 24/16!!?! You ARE a weirdo, Tangmo. I love this. Man, you're right, Scott NAILED it! This is very very entertaining. [from 1 weirdo to another: I once wrote a complex piece (mostly lost now) that changed time signatures always with "a beat missing". It's called Minus One Toot Suite. Started with 3/4 and 4/4 making a 7, then went to 4/4 and 5/4 making 9, then 5/4 and 6/4 making 11 and so forth.] Carry on!!

Nice. You both did a fine job.
A really nice balance between the bass and Scott's guitar - so you kind of listen to both at the same time separately - it that makes sense...
A good mix.

Sweet piece. I can't imagine how you can do it. I picture Scott listening to that track and playing along with it. Is that how it is done? I kind of echo Floyd's comment, that there are two spirits present. Anyway, great job.

Excellent work!
I really got into this one. Super lead over a great bass and drum foundation. Super use of those pads also.
This is really good.

Tangmo & Scott That was one cool bass & guitar competition:) Very unusual dreamy tune. Listens very well! Many powerful turns and twists. Tone of guitar and bass are so different, yet they sound great together. Had to listen 3 times to fully appreciate it. Everything works very well. The only minor thing which distracts me personally was a bit to much of hiss pad / brushes?
Congrats to both of you on this unique tune! Thank you for sharing.
Misha.

This is so very nice! And different is often a real, unexpected treat. And that's exactly what this is. Fabulous backing tracks and Scott has such a sweet touch on the strings. Listened to the HQ version and it just blows me away.
What a terrific journey. That was such a cool listen ... full without being crowded ... not always easy to do. Excellent!
It's both mesmerizing and hypnotic. Mesmerizing because it glides you to a new place you want to be. Hypnotic because you get lost there and don't want to come back.
Thanks for some real fine entertainment.
Please be safe ...

This is not what I expected it had a sweet haunting sound and a great guitar sound.. working together, this was a new experience and it takes a bit to get the flow of it.
But it works !!.
Enjoyed this.

Difficult to put into words, this is a completely new world - mesmerizing combination of strange eastern rhythms and western melodies and chording with a touch of an unexpected collaboration of two talented musicians. Scott's guitar playing is perfect for the soundtrack mood (eastern/western movie) and the chord progression is very unique and beautiful. For some reason, this reminds me of Paco de Lucia.

Excellent instrumental, Scott's guitar sounds really nice (some nice Spanish style licks in there) in the mix and that bass sounds great.
A really appealing song and a great listen.

Tangmo & Scott, Whoa... there`s a style that`s in this time signature?! Love the fretless bass and Scott`s tone taking this into space...travelling on trajectories that wonderfully cross. You have to relax the expectations listening and then its magic. HQ mix sounds good.

Unusual and captivating. An aural delight.
Scott, your guitar work is other worldly. Along with Scott's guitars, that bass line swirls around me and carries me along.
Fantastic collaboration!

Thanks everyone for the awesome comments. This song has an incredible feel to it. I had to let go the technical side of the song and just kind of dive in, relax and play to the feel of the song. Really learned allot from the experience.

Tangmo & Scott,
The combination of Guitar and Fretless Bass is very nice. It's very difficult to play a song with a strange time signature, but it's wonderful that the chord progression and performance have not failed to the end. I feel talent very much. The advantage of MIDI is that you can assemble such songs. Enjoyed my listen a lot.
Best regards.

Wow, the complexity is initially overwhelming but after just listening to the totality of the production and not trying to parse it out it became absolutely captivating.
A showcase within the showcase.
A brilliant idea along with the equally brilliant performances.
Could not imagine that guitar and bass interplay working any better!

I want to thank all who listened and commented on this piece. Life has been busy and sad lately, but I didn't want to let this slide pass without saying thanks...and especially to Scott. WOW! Very cool tune, and Scott sounds fabulous. Thanks, Boss. Sweet piece. I can't imagine how you can do it. I picture Scott listening to that track and playing along with it. Is that how it is done? I kind of echo Floyd's comment, that there are two spirits present. Anyway, great job. For Scott's part...yeah I think that's pretty much how he did it. BB pretty much wrote my bits. Excellent work!

This is really good. Thanks, Mario. I know your tastes can run a little left-field, so appreciate the nod. Tangmo & Scott That was one cool bass & guitar competition:) Very unusual dreamy tune. Congrats to both of you on this unique tune! Thank you for sharing.
Misha. Thanks, Misha. Not sure about what you're hearing. The .wav is significantly better than the .mp3 in this particular case, but I used at least two drum tracks...the RD replacement, and my original midi>Kurz file. They may not have played as well together as I hoped. This is so very nice! And different is often a real, unexpected treat. And that's exactly what this is. Fabulous backing tracks and Scott has such a sweet touch on the strings. Listened to the HQ version and it just blows me away.

Alan Maybe a little seed was planted for your psych guitar piece? Anyway, I appreciate the comments.
Janne Thanks, Janne. If Paco De Lucia is a subcontinental spaghetti western composer, I'll take that. Funky, quirky, and mostly just COOL!!! Love that fretless, and the way it interacts with the drums and Scott's guitar!! Great job on everything!! Take care. Greg Thanks, Greg...though I think the credit really goes to Scott. He's the one that did the interacting. Excellent instrumental, Scott's guitar sounds really nice (some nice Spanish style licks in there) in the mix and that bass sounds great.
A really appealing song and a great listen.
Peter Thanks, Peter. We appreciate it. Tangmo & Scott, Whoa... there`s a style that`s in this time signature?! Love the fretless bass and Scott`s tone taking this into space...travelling on trajectories that wonderfully cross. You have to relax the expectations listening and then its magic. HQ mix sounds good.
Robert That's precisely how the both of us approached this...Scott in his play and me in the production. Thanks Robert. Didn't you get a bit of a preview? Unusual and captivating. An aural delight.
Scott, your guitar work is other worldly. Along with Scott's guitars, that bass line swirls around me and carries me along.

Shigeki Adachi Thank you, Shigeki Adachi. Yes, without midi and that BB style, this would have been impossible. Wow, the complexity is initially overwhelming but after just listening to the totality of the production and not trying to parse it out it became absolutely captivating.

J&B Thanks, Janice and Bud. That's definitely what it takes. Thanks again everyone for checking out the song. Glad everyone liked it. And especially thanks to you, Scott. In order, you were: 1. Curious 2. Courageous 3. Capable and Talented. 4. Clear and straight-forward. 5. ...and maybe most importantly, punctual, tidy, and well-groomed. You work and play well with others...and that's going on your permanent record. Thanks.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!
If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.
A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."
"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."
"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
