My PC is a bit sluggish. I've unchecked unwanted stuff in the Startup, etc. but I was wondering about getting one those PC optimiser products, but I'm a bit wary of some of these well-marketed tools, i.e. they may do more harm than good. Has anyone used a PC optimiser and/or can confidently recommend one? Thanks.

I keep the following FREE software in a Folder on my pendrive and try to convince all my buddies to use them>

Ccleaner> this software cleans all the background stuff off your drive after using the internet. Cookies, adware, etc. Works great, I use it everytime I'm done with the internet for the day. Depending on how much stuff I've looked at or downloaded, it can automatically eliminate up a Gigabyte of junk!

Malwarebytes>I got this on the suggestion of Mac, as stated it scans your drive and finds malware on your drive.

AVG antivirus>Works fine, a much smaller footprint and drain on resources than Norton and the like.

Mozilla Firefox>I stopped using IE years ago and haven't looked back. I'm very happy with it.

After trying many "Optimiser" programs, I find that most of them are a hassle. Better to use the tools above and do a regular system of file maintanance and Defraging. There are many pages on the net about keeping your computer in top form. I try to learn all I can and keep up with the new tips. I then make a Word doc will all my favorite tips.

HTH,
Ed

PC Tools Registry mechanic is the best. I've used it for 2 years. Has never messed things up. $29.00. Also CCleaner works good in conjunction with it. Free

AVG link scanner can slow browsing a lot on some machines especially older ones, best thing to do is go to advanced options in AVG and disable it.

As windows gets slower over time, somethimes the only way to go is to format and reinstall.

As regards Optimiser programes I'm not a great believer in them, if windows is going to fall over it will fall over and nothing will stop it.

Best thing to do is to make an acronis backup when all is running well, even keep an old backup, so a year or so later when windows is slowing down reinstall the old backup, will save a lot of time.

I was a firm believer in CCleaner for a long time until I tried Eusing Free Registry Cleaner & Free Registry Defrag. Found a lot of stuff CCleaner missed. And we could tell an improvement over time.....

Auslogics Disk Defrag, Auslogics Duplicate File Finder, Revo Uninstaller, Malware Bytes, Zone Alarm, and AVG Free are all the ones we use with great results. EVERY op program we have tried has slowed our systems down, and I don't always remember to shut all that off before using my DAW.

SO.....I dual boot.....solves a LOT of problems!

Hi,

I've used Ccleaner and Lavasoft Ad-Aware along with AVG for a long time, all good.

Recently found this:

Iobit Advanced System Care

and:

Iobit Smart Defrag

They really speeded up my computer and Websurfing.

I reccomend them both.

Personally, I use Avast A/V, Spybot Search and Destroy, and not too much else. My system seems to run fine. Of course, and most people freak at me when I say this, wiping your computer once a year, and reinstalling everything will clear out most of the unwanted stuff, let's you get rid of the things you really don't use, and opens up valuable space on your hard drive.

I tried the Eusing Free Registry Cleaner right after running CCleaner, and it did indeed find 252 errors that CCleaner had left. Thanks for this tip, jcspro40. It's a good one.

Your very Welcome Matt Finley! That is about what it found for us also, we had I think 321 or 312....something along those lines.

And Gary Curran, I do 2 of ours about 2 times a year, I load - unload - test a lot of software. Using Acrons it is a 10min job after wiping to get the system back up & running with everything intact.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
