This is an older song. Mostly BB tracks with some acoustic guitar.

It's about one of my good friends. He is responsible for introducing me to my future wife. As the music is playing, there's a lot of photos of the blue grass festival he hosted at his Virginia mountain property. When the music stops and the fiddle part comes back in, there's a photo of the 3 of us back in the day.

Wolf

Enjoy the song and the journey into part of my past.

Guitarhacker,

Terrific bluegrass/folk tune. The mix sounds stellar to me and the vocal is rock solid (love those harmonies--oh, and that steel guitar is a nice touch as well). Great little video you put together, too. Enjoyed it very much--a worthy ode to your friend.

Hope all is well in your world--

Deej

Heartbreakingly beautiful.
Losing friends is the hardest thing for me as you get older.

Wow, Herb, what a great song about good times. Really loved the video, and kept thinking I'd see me in there somewhere too. Man, that is one high vocal and you nailed it. I feel like I know Wolf, and I partied with him many times. A wonderful tribute, and such a good good song, Herb. It may have been long, but when it was over I sat staring at the monitor with memories dampening my eyes. I pushed play again. Thank you.

Enjoy whatever happens!

What a song. Not just a song, but an experience. I thought this was a great job. I loved the music. I'll anxiously be awaiting the list of your tracks. Mixed superbly, haunting fiddle and the steel was incredible - was that straight Biab or did you use something on it? The story and the writing were great. Like Marty, I never met Wolf, but this song made me feel as though we were good friends. I've had similar experiences in different places with good friends, now gone. This took me right back there. The video played a big part in bringing it all to life too. The only places I've been in Virginia have been big cities, but this is the part I've always wanted to see. I remember flying over it once and my youngest son pointed out all the lush greenery below us and remarked how beautiful it was. I remember my only response to him was, "that's American son." You've brought a lot of elements together here in just the right way to bring a piece of America alive here - Thank you!

Deej56, B.D.Thomas, Chulaivet1966, RSDean, Babumusic, justanoldmuso, Brad Willianms. Thank you all for commenting.

This song is pretty old now.... I don't know if I can find the tracks. They're probably on my laptop, which is what I was using at the time I wrote this.

Thank you all for your comments. Wolf was the kind of person who was instantly your friend 10 seconds after you met him. I met him for the first time at a bluegrass festival our band was hired to provide the sound and lights as well as play a few sets. 3 days of bluegrass music. Wolf was there and introduced himself to the band. We hung out for that weekend. He started showing up at gigs all over the state where we were playing. He was trying to learn guitar and often asked me questions about how I did something. He did introduce me to a girl who lived around the corner from him and she became my wife.
Wold ended up buying about 25 acres of land in Fancy Gap Virginia on the side of a hill. It was gorgeous and had a creek at the bottom. He sold a few acres to some of his friends and kept 17 acres for himself and Snuzi.... his GF at the time. He built a house into the side of the hill. Before he ever built the house, he decided to host his very own bluegrass music festival. That first year, there was no stage. It was primitive camping and a cold creek to bathe in. As time went on, he built the stage you see in some of the pics.

Through the years, it got bigger. We lost several of the folks you see in this video, so it has deep meaning to a number of the folks who attended this Beano Festival as it was called, yearly. I think it actually made it to 25 years or so before it was retired permanently. I didn't make it to all of them through the years. Kim and I made it to many of the early ones. Once we had kids, it was hard at times to make it. We were sure to be there for his wedding. It rained almost the entire weekend but stopped long enough for the wedding. I think we made a few more in the hills before it ended.

Wolf developed lung cancer and went through treatment. The high cost caused him to have to sell his beloved mountain home and move east of Raleigh to be closer to family and in more affordable housing. The cancer went into remission for a few years and was discovered several years later having recurred in several places including lungs, bones, and brain. He didn't survive for long.

Between Snuzi, his wife, Debbie, and myself, we provided the photos of this event through the years.

At the very last Beano... held in this area.... about 20 minutes from the house here..... Someone had painted a picture of Wolf with his Gibson Hummingbird acoustic leaning on an old pickup truck. You can see this painting at 4:09 in the video. It's also the opening still shot for the video in YT. Anyway... they had 100 signed copies made. You see Smokey (RIP) presenting number 1/100 to Snuzi, Wolf's widow. As the video opens, the folks with the cups, are spreading his ashes in the creek on the property with the permission of the new owners. I was presented with a copy of this painting which hangs in my studio. 81/100.

Wolf, as I mentioned, wanted so badly to be a guitar player. However, one day, he acquired a mandolin and the rest, as they say, is history. He fell in love with the mandolin and became quite accomplished on the instrument. He joined a bluegrass band and played in the mountain area of Virginia and NC.

Wolf loved life, loved people, and loved music. He may be gone, but he'll never be forgotten and the influence he had on the people he met.

Glad you guys enjoyed this song and video.

I tend to post this on the Beano facebook page every year at the end of August. He timed the Beano festival to coincide as closely as possible with his birthday, and coincidentally, pretty close to mine as well.

Hi, Herb.

Thanks for posting the song and sharing your memories of Wolf.

The superlatives seem to be already used up, but I agree with them all. A touching tribute, and well done.

This is a fine tribute to an obviously really joyous person, Herb. We can relate and we know how precious those memories are of playing music with a close friend who has left us way too soon.

It’s all good: the video, lyric, band, your performances and the mix.

Who knows? We may have run into each other at a festival years ago. Bud wanted to mention he attended and jammed at a couple of festivals in VA.

Wolf’s smile seems as though it would’ve lit up a room. His introducing you to your wife to be just adds a little more sweetness to his memory.

Well done!

Great tune in and of itself, then as a tribute it goes to a very high level. Life can be hard for the living, we've got to carry on when others pass. A fine, fine tribute!

I love the thudding string bass.
Tidy mix, good arrangement and that high voice works a treat.

Hi Herb ...

There's little left to say after all the previous comments. I'll simply say it was beyond wonderful. You did Wolf proud!

One line of my father's family comes from Carroll County & Grayson County - mostly the towns of Galax & Hillsville. Mostly in the years between 1750 and 1795. It's beautiful area.

This is truly awesome, Herb.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
