Hi Joise

What a brilliant song! Right from the outset the groove pulled me into the mix. There's no doubt about it, you're an outstanding songwriter and singer. Your lyrics were really well crafted. I liked the conversational tone you managed and I found myself thinking, "Wow! Pat Pattison would be incredibly impressed with the way that you've used assonance and consonance in place of perfect rhyme." In my opinion, your song is a skillful example of lyric writing tools being used to enhance a song's emotion. You've really nailed the "not quite over you yet" feeling of the central character: I heard what she was saying about "not missing you" but I didn't, at any time, believe her. As you've shown so well, lyric structure can do that. It reminded me of the song, "Really Can't Be Gone" by Tim McGraw. This song employed a similar approach to lyrics as yours and, again, lyric structure was used to enhance disbelief. If you're interested, here's the link for it...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jmbv9IMroM8

There is absolutely nothing that I'd change. The song, the mix, the singing and the production are all top notch and ready for radio in my opinion. If you hadn't told me, I wouldn't have known that you'd used compression on your voice. The sound was crystal clear and completely natural.

I'm waiting for the next song now!
Noel

P.S. Josie, I have just re-read (and, as a consequence, edited) my post. I apologize if my referring to Pat sounded a bit patronizing. I meant it as a compliment. I have a huge respect for Prof. Pattison from Berklee College. I believe that he's one of the world's top gurus when it comes to lyrics. In about a month's time, I'll be going to my 8th or 9th weekend seminar with him!

I had the idea over six months ago and thought it was playful and fun. It went through several rewrites - you know the drill 10% inspiration 90% perspiration...grin. If I played lead guitar I would stick a lead run on the break. Noel, I visited your link, that is a pretty song by Tim. I appreciate you as a fellow songwriter.

Thank all of you for listening and your comments.

Hi Josie

That's a great song and production - hard not to tap your feet to it. Sounds like you're sitting right here. I'm wondering if that is your recording room ambience I am hearing or sonic adjustment from a plugin - my ears are not sensitive enough that I can determine this just by listening. If it's a production secret I'll understand.

I've detected a similar vocal ambience on Rosanne Cash's King's Record Shop CD - I quite like it on your voice (if indeed I'm not hearing things ). You've got a really good strum going there. I keep hearing spots where a resonator guitar would fit nicely as punctuation for the lyrics. . . wouldn't want to hear it all the way through though. The songs strength is its simplicity of production.

Good stuff. Ian

Thank you Ian. Actually I sang it with a fat pillow on one side of the mic. LOL. This room has hard surfaces. I intend to build two pvc baffle - garment rack - type things and throw comforters over them. I feel intimidated to really belt due to the neighbors and the natural ring in the room. So I have to watch volume in here. I'm hoping the pvc baffles will fix that.

I used Blockfish vintage vocals on the vocal track then added a little eq low cut, tiny amount of reverb, and PG dynamics opto gentle on the final "master" mix stereo track with a slight boost on the peaklimit pre gain. I'm still experimenting learning all that plug in stuff so I'm glad you liked the sound.

Hi Josie,

This style is definately not my cup of tea, but I liked it anyway. Great song.

Cheers

Josie,
I really did like it. One small comment, and it's not even a criticism, but throughout the song, the time never changed. I can see the ending with the minute counted down three minutes, and just ticking off the seconds.

I'm not too sure about the pillow, to me, your vocals sounded like the pillow was partially between you and the mic, but they weren't bad.

All in all, a very enjoyable song.

josie, i hear tanya tucker in your vox, good on ya. i might try just a wee tad of compression to pull the vox out a bit more but that's just my personal preference. nice job.

Thanks occ and Superbron!

Gary, the pillow was "to" the side between the mic and wood blinds to stop some reflections but I didn't notice anything muffled because of it - that was just me going too soft on some words. grin. I tried the a and b but then decided to boogie all the way through except for the stop. And should probably edit out that loud guitar hold at the stop but as I said I haven't done any editing other than adding the echo of missing you. As for the time, for a song demo, I've learned to keep that to what's expected. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Noel,
I never for a moment thought your post was patronizing. It was a wonderful compliment! Made my day! I've read some of Pat's articles on the web. A friend of mine in TN recently bought one of his books and really likes it. I have yet to read any of his books but I imagine his seminars are wonderful learning experiences. I'll be looking forward to hearing about it when you get back.

Hi Josie,
I really enjoyed listening to your song. And I still say the best part of any of your songs is you to sing them.

Thanks for posting.
Later,
Jim

Josie, that was SUPER! This song has the potential to make it on country radio IMHO. Great lyrics, great rhythm, great backing tracks and one superior vocal.

Straight to the keeper folder.

Thank you Mario! I'm so glad you like it.

There are a few things that I want to tweak on the music and production with fresh ears. grin.

For any future board readers / listeners reading this thread - I'm removing the song from the link to work on it.

Thanks again to every one of you who took time to listen and comment.

I'm confused, Josie. I'm getting just one track on your MySpace and it's called "He's Faithful".
is that the number we're discussing?

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
