Hi all,

Other than the hardware voicelive is there any alternative software to the tc-helicon, and if so how does it compare?

I have just started playing around with the tc-helicon and fairly impressed with the harmonies but soloing them on their own they sound a bit robotic.

Another thing I was thinking of is it possible with the harmonies in the helicon to keep the harmony levels so low in the mix that it mainly helps just to fill out or enhance the main vocal, without most people realising that it's being used atall?

probably that is the way I want to go, where using less is actually giving you more!

any advice appreciated.

thanks

The harmonies are outputted on individual tracks, so their levels would be determined by you when you mix all of your tracks together. less is usually better.

Guitar center has a software from anteres the pitch correction folks, that does harmonies. I was going to buy it, but it required a ILOK USB tab and i did not want to purchase that as well no knowing how good it was. The program was on sale for $49 but the saleman said the ILOK was about $40 so it was still under $100 but that bugged me! I thought i swould do a little research.

By the time you do the work to get a harmonizer to sound great, you may be better off recording your harmonies and simply tuning them to get that 'exact' harmony these effects give.

Also- treat these harmonizer created tracks like the vocal tracks they are meant to emulate. Throw some EQ and reverb on them so they match the original vocal's environment a little better.

The robotic effect in the Harmonizer included with PTW can be affected greatly by experimenting with the male/female option (depending on the note renge being used), by doing each harmony track individually, using a MIDI track to tell it the exact notes to 'sing' and then tinkering with the male/female and portamento options.

The trick to using individual MIDI tracks is to play those desired harmony notes in exact timing with the vocal track being used to create the harmony tracks. Hitting a note late will make the harmonizer 'jump' into robotic sounding creation.
Just a few ideas to try.

I shy away from those products requiring a locking device too. Been burned a couple times when a company stopped paying the third-party locking device company to support the device.

It just dawned on me that this could be one of my problems with TC Halicon.

I've been known to be a few ticks off at times.

I'd save up for a digitech vocalizer...not too expensive hardware and great for laying down live harmonies in the studio... or better, a live gig!!

I downloaded the anteres demo and it will not play in either RB or PTPA. Go figure the VSTI implemetation on these two need a serious look.

Thanks for all replies. Its a shame the anteres won't work in PG products. To be honest I never even knew it existed. I wonder how does it compare to the tc-helicon (for those who might have used it in a different DAW)

ah well, can't have everything I suppose.

You could, at one time, hire the Andrews sisters. Or the Blackwood Brothers. Or the Jacksum 5 who's now (5-1) or the sum of the lesser parts.

I have the Voicelive and have fun using it. When my voice and vigour return will post an example or three, I think it sounds ok, but won't pass muster here. So what. I'm not planning on replacing the whole celestial choir, I just want some of them to be grateful dead I am.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
