TO PG…Re ..offering ultrapak (and other packs ? ) on M2 ssd….doable ??
ive been experimenting a lot with m2 ssd vs older storage formats.
i am extremely impressed with M2 on my new pc and the blazing fast speeds on this ssd 'chewing gum' format. eg copying 600 mb using a M2 was 1 sec beating any other older storage format ive used. …(this was with a run of the mill M2)…SO…
i'm just curious if the following examples would occur noticeably faster if the upak came from pg installed on a M2 ssd… (no install of content on users C or other designated drive…operating straight off the pg M2 ssd.)...such as…
1..faster realtrak n' real drum generation ? 2..faster mixdown of 40 recorded traks in realband to stereo master as an example ? and would project *.SEQ's load and save faster ? 3..faster loading of biab demo songs from stylepicker ? and overall would bb be more nimble and load/save faster ? (NOTE the users song projects not on the pg drive only pg content. assume the users content is on M2 eg C drive.)
in summary would users notice significant agility// time savings for bb and rb projects. assuming pg offered the paks on the M2 ssd drives…which i'm assuming isnt the case currently ? please correct me if i'm wrong or missing something.
t'm also bearing in mind re the above that in addition, every year, the shipped pg content is growing with more rt's//rd's etc etc. so wouldnt faster storage M2 tech realise a benefit for all ??
have a great 2023.

I just changed to M2 drives and saw a significant improvement similar to that of changing from a hard drive to an SSD.
I think it has been established that the CPU affects regeneration speed more than drive throughput.

If you have fast drives why not have an option in Biab to play the files direct from the drive rather than writing all the sections together into RAM and then playing ? This would give you speed. I have show this a million times in Reaper how it just instantly opens and plays all the tracks. Watch the RAM in Task Manager bbw_64.exe as you add more tracks to Biab.

I think an obvious downside for PGM in supplying on M2 is the mechanical issues. The user has to open the PC to fit it, the sticks are at static discharge risk, many PCs have only on M2 slot. Would PGM really want to get into those issues rather than just supply the USB drive and have the user install/copy? My guess is that the risks and hassle for them are more than the benefits.

What would be the issue with installing it myself on my SSD drive? I haven't found any issues when moving drives or installing BIAB and content onto other drives (but I am only using PlusPAKs not any larger).

NOOOO….maybe my op wasnt clear. the upak wouldnt be shipped on a naked m2…to be installed by a user manually internally in a pc…. but as current ie…usb enclosure.and if the user chose could just hang it off a usb 3//usb4 external port if wished.
i guess for those intrepid tech souls with a spare m2 mainboard slot other than the win os c m2 drive…..they could always i guess take the m2 out of the enclosure or just install as per currently.
for example, my new PC has an extra slot…but for a 2.5 drive. i havent tried installing a m2 in a 2.5 adaptor/enclosure yet and installing inside my new pc which comes with one internal c m2 ssd installed. one reason being concern over possible heat build up ? with a second drive...dunno.
I have however installed a m2 in an enclosure and installed it in an external usb dock. very fast backups etc. total cost for 256 gb m2 drive plus enclosure was about 50 bucks. i dont need big capacity m2 drives. i also prefer multiple smaller back up drives rather than one big honking multi tb drive…just in case the big multi tb fails.
in summary upak would ship as currently with usb connector. only diff would be the pg product would be installed on m2 ssd.
the way i figure it is usb 3 currently is darn super fast …sooo..usb 4 is gonna be bonkers fast 60 gb/s ? … sooo...what operational positive impacts will be realised for the pg user with the coming of usb 4 ?? cos i just dont know…
of course as matt says then there is the aspect of faster processors like 6ghz etc ? but the way i figure it...users will be slow to buy them if they are pricey.. but m2's are dirt cheap. eg my 50 buk combo above. right now frankly i have enough ryzen processor speed.
happiness.

If you use a M2 drive in an external USB enclosure, you are throttling the capability of the drive by the limited throughput speed of a USB interface. It will work fine but not be as fast as it could.

My first reaction was "can one even do that?". Yes, one can. There are USB housings that hold M2 NVME cards. I didn't know that. It certainly appears significantly more expensive than an ordinary thumb drive or spinning rust USB drive, though. All I've seen so far are M2 to USB adapters, no ready-built drives, though I didn't spend long looking. Personally I've copied onto the PC and put the shipped media somewhere safe.

Matt//Gordon. 1..RE..throttling. yep good point but still its pretty fast also with usb 4 clocking in at 60 gb/s will it be an issue ? i dont think so. only on older usb pc's. 2..RE..no one selling m2's in enclosures pre-built. they are starting to appear. for example i think but not sure if sabrent have an external nano v2. i found this for example... https://www.amazon.ca/Portable-External-Drives-Laptop-Phones/dp/B081LDYFL3the above is pricey cos of storage size. overall i'm committed to m.2. i'll never go back to old rust drives or thumb drives. the old ones i have i will just keep for extra backups where the file sizes are not huge. eg our personal low volume files. i also store backups offsite of course. (i'm paranoid...lol.) i have drives from old pc's i put in enclosures as well as older upak drives etc etc. anyhoo any multitrack song of mine max is prolly a few hundred megs cos i use flac recording on each trak. (the imported bb traks are wav of course.) so useing a 50 buk 256 gb m2 in an enclosure that costs total 50 buks for m2 and enclosur is way enoiugh for me. crikey on low volume files useing m2 ssd i dont even see the win progress 'thingy'. its just bam its there. best to both of you. om

They'll almost certainly come down in price, of course. (Is electronics the only area where prices normally fall rather than rise?)

Gordon. yep tech will come down in price. thats why even tho' i'm lovin' running bb/rb/reaps on this fantastic ryzen mini pc that cost peanuts and lovin' the m2 tech...i'm also prolly gonna get a mac mini at some point n' check out the 'dark side'..lol cos i'm very impressed that apple is now offering power at low prices. what i'll prolly do is wait for the early adopters to buy m3//m4 minis when they come out and snag me a cheapo refurb m2 mini to try out running biab//reaper//logic etc. what i'm REALLY interested in is how apple ramp up processor speeds with the m series processors OR plateau or run into roadblocks due to the laws of physics. ps heres the sabrent nano ...fast little portable. dunno how good tho'. plenty of others coming out. check on amazon//the net. https://www.amazon.ca/Sabrent-Rocket-External-Aluminum-SB-512-NANO-BLK/dp/B07XL6QYMV?th=1best for you in 2023. om

Just an.., Yes, totally agree. We are watching prices of 128 and 256GB SSD, and they’re getting lower all the time, so this may become an affordable option, and hopefully soon! Less than $50 wholesale cost would be good.
Have Fun! Peter Gannon PG Music Inc.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
