Hello ,

I just got a new Mac with the Apple M2 processor .

Does anyone know if BIB 2023 will work with the M2 .

The PG website was only showing the M1 chip last time I looked
at the system requirements . Can't find any mention of the newer M2

Thanks

Ditto to what Andrew said. Fast and no issues on my mini M2 Pro.

It's good to know that BIAB works on M1 but I would also like to know if it runs natively on mac new M1 / M2.

Nope.

It must be run over Rosetta 2. There are many threads and announcements from PG Music about this.

Hi Mike (or anyone from PG Music)

Has it been officially announced that BIAB is being developed to be native on Apple Silicon?

When Apple launched the new processor line they stated that Rosetta 2 was only going to be supported for a few years, to provide developers with time to migrate their codebases.

I only have Apple Silicon Macs these days, and would like to know that my continued investment in BIAB is not a waste of money.

Cheers from Oz!

The Band-in-a-Box DAW Plugin is a universal binary, so can run natively on both Intel and Silicon machines.

The Band-in-a-Box main app runs natively on Intel, and runs on Silicon / M-series Macs via Rosetta 2 translation. Note that the user doesn't need to do anything to get the Rosetta thing to work, it is completely invisible. We do not currently have a timeline for a universal binary / native ARM version. As far as I am aware, Apple has not made any public announcement or provided any information to developers about an end of life for Rosetta 2, so the best we could do is speculate.

Both Band-in-a-Box and the Band-in-a-Box DAW plugin run significantly faster on Silicon machines than on Intel machines. For the plugin at least, this improved performance is much more significant than running the plugin native vs. Intel on the same M-series machine.

As I read:

AAPL is designing MAC OS to increasingly take advantage of Multi CPU and GPU processors.
Apparently LogicPro and Final Cut Pro currently deliver on this optimization

DaVinci Resolve (a non AAPL product) also mentions in their literature performance advantages of AAPL silicon vice Rosetta translation.

Rosetta is not part of this OS level strategy.

It would seem CPU intensive activities of BIAB (track regen for example) could well benefit from such OS enhancements.

I run BIAB on a MacMini M2Pro 32GB Ram 12/19 CPU/GPU. BIAB screams compared to the 2013 Intel Macbook Pro I ran it on.

Yet one can't help but feel BIAB on Mac/Rosetta is not firing on all cylinders.

Personally I hope PG Music will initiate a development effort before AAPL decides to sunset Rosetta and the process becomes a bit more of a scramble.

Certainly, a ground up rewrite is no small effort in time, money, people.
It's a serious long term commitment
A commitment to the Mac product some of user base would welcome.

Thanks for the feedback Andrew, however it just makes me wonder about PG Music’s long term commitment to their loyal customers using Apple.

Here is Apple’’s official guidance to developers regarding Rosetta 2:

“Rosetta is a translation process that allows users to run apps that contain x86-64 instructions on Apple silicon,” its developer page reads. “Rosetta is meant to ease the transition to Apple silicon, giving you time to create a universal binary for your app. It is not a substitute for creating a native version of your app.”

Considering that Peter Gannon posted how Mac sales of BIAB have eclipsed Windows, I find it both baffling and concerning that development of a native version isn’t well under way.

Personally i wouldn't fret to much yet. PGM has always kept up with the OS changes. and as PG said Mac is slowly taking an advantage, i would be shocked if that is not already being discussed. I am sure they will update us and the product when this begins to happen. Until then just use it as it is and enjoy the ride.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
