I have BIAB 2021, but only really began using it this year, though I've had great success with having composed new material as well as creating backing tracks for songs I wrote decades ago as well as instrumental versions of the latter, but what I really need now is more real instruments, particularly real flute, but it doesn't exist in my setup. Is there such a thing in BIAB 2023? I'd also like bassoon, oboe and cello.

Re flute, the kind of sound I'm after is as in UK Canterbury band Caravan's "Love Song With Flute".

If you search for flute in the RealTracks and don’t find what Dan is showing you, then perhaps you have the Pro version. Upgrading to the Ultrapak would give you almost everything.

depends why you want the flute. don't forget RTs are prerecoded and unless you get a playable RT you'll be 'stuck' with the phrases the musician recorded. if you want the flute to play the notes you want then midi is the way to go. (correct me if i'm wrong but aren't playable RT's midi approximations of the RT actual sound? Or are they sampled RTs?)

if you ask for advice you'll get recommendations for flute vsts ranging from free to pricey and they may be what you want - not more RTs. same with bassoon, oboe and cello.

edit - do you want more 'real' instrumnts because the midi sounds you are getting are not that good? upgrade your midi sounds with a new GM synth or get some good vsts. if yor midi sounds are poor there are ways to improve sound enormously.

Thanks Dan/MusicStudent, seeing that list is extremely helpful as I can now see I can get what I want if I upgrade.

Thanks for the reply Bob, but I don't have a midi or alas room for one. I prefer the real instruments, but you're correct about the phrases. There's a particular lead guitar solo I've used really successfully in 5 different tracks and each one sounds as if the musician had tailor made the solos for it, but in 1 track I had to cut and paste a different ending to the solo and in another cut and paste from 2 solos make 1 solo to get rid of the repeated phrases. I now find it impossible to use the solo style in anything else as even after 50+ regenerations I still get the same old phrases coming back.

That sounds like a slight misunderstanding. MIDI is the protocol and can talk to hardware of software. There are good, free, soft synths around and some good free soundfonts to go with them, so there needs be neither cost nor physical size to use MIDI. It's definitely the case that some instruments work nicely when done by a synth and some don't. BIAB come with VSTSynthFont64 included, but hidden away a bit. It's in the manual.

Where RealTracks are great is that they give a good, realistic, performance with the nuances, though they're still partially 'synthed' as they're frequency shifted to the relevant key.

MIDI synths generally need us to add insert the nuances ourselves, which isn't so easy, but can be done.

There are some very good commercial MIDI-controlled instruments. You might ask advice about specifics.

There are also external MIDI devices that can be physically quite compact, e.g., Ketron SD1000 ... there are others.

We’ve gone from flute to edited guitar solos, so I’m not sure we know exactly what you want to do. We don’t want to mislead you where you think BIAB can do something that it cannot do automatically. Could you be very specific? Are you trying to recreate a flute or guitar solo with exact notes?

Although BIAB regenerates many variations, it isn’t unlimited. If you have BIAB 2023, a new feature allows you to regenerate only part of a track.

you don't need room for 'a midi'. you've got one already with BIAB - a soft synth midi player called vstsynthfont and sforzando will play individual midi instruments like a flute. Franky i often can't tell the diffence betweena a top quality midi instrument and the real thing.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
