Most of my BiaB tracks (so far all instrumentals) are easy to categorise - alternative rock or soundtrack - but some I just can't think what the genre would be. This is the instrumental I'd like to post on the User Showcase, thus what genre would you call it? On SoundCloud I listed it as Soft Rock/Jazz, but is that accurate? Note in brief: it's not a piano solo, but the piano plays throughout, eventually it's joined by an organ, then later a tenor sax which plays to the end. It's a 4 cycle ('chorus') track and bass guitar enters for the penultimate cycle and drums for the final:

Ya, adding the Sax does not make it Jazz. grin

Agreed. That's why I'm asking the question. But in the User Showcase they combine easy listening with Country and my track wouldn't fit with others in that category. I also think of easy listening as such as James Last and other similar (to me) bland music. On FB "Sophia Loves V2" (version 2) was described as a "very cool" track, while the V3 which I've yet to post anywhere is definitely alternative rock and is very different to the V2, though it's the same chord sequences and tempo. The V1 was my first ever attempt at a soundtrack track (for a video in which the visuals and wordage was key), but that was bland in comparison to other soundtrack tracks I've used - on it's own it could be called easuly listening - but the V2 has something else to it (though with all music it's best listened to in the right environment and in the right frame of mind. I recall in the 70s loathing a specific album by a favourite artist, but I wasn't in the right frame of mind for it and I later loved it. My sister initially loathed Sade, then an album was played one evening with friends and she found she adored it).

I would call it smooth jazz. But I know what you mean as some of my songs are hard to pinpoint what genre they may fall into.

I wouldn't worry about the genre I would worry about the length of the song. It takes a long time to for it to get interesting IMHO. Shorten it to 4 to 4.5 minutes and you will have a winner. YMMV

Thanks for the reply. Although it's not jazz per se, it is more of a mix as I categorised it in my SoundCloud post.

I don't agree about shortening, though. While I'm aware that online most listeners, viewers and readers want 'fast food'- I call FB 'FasfoodBook'! - but when I'm listening to a playlist of my own material I enjoy the solo piano and the chord changes, followed by the slow introduction of the other instruments. I'm 72 now so I'm composing purely as one of a few creative hobbies - I write, including songs, I do CGI and create videos - so I'm creating primarily for myself, friends and family. I've currently no plans to post on music sites for dosh as I've been self-publishing for a decade and there's no real money in it unless you're in the top 10-1% most successful. I've read on music sites classic sales advice such as "don't have long intros" but that's because the sites want sales, not art.

I don't consider smooth jazz as pure jazz. It's like an intro to elementary jazz. Again YMMV.

The shortening was just my opinion and I respect your answer. Like you I am a 77 year old musician whom is "composing purely as one of a few creative hobbies". Well actually it is my only creative hobby. After years of playing in wedding bands I am now composing and playing what I want for my own enjoyment and if others like it great. If not also great.

Regardless I did like your song.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
