Hi folks. I have an issue and was wondering how to resolve it.
I have biab 2023 installed on a 1tb SSD Sandisc external hd. I've NO space on my main HD left to run it so it has to be run externally.
My problem is that if I have to power off the imac ( Sonoma ), I have to reinstall all the RTs which is a real pain. Anyone got any idea how to solve this please ?.
Had most of the RT downloaded & installed, then it froze and I have to redownload EVERYTHING again. Drivin me mad.
Here's a copy of the fault log

furry, most likely what I say here will not be of much direct use but FWIW I'm running BiaB (as shipped from PGMusic) on an external drive with no problems.
Here's the rub . . . I'm on a Win 11 box.

Like Warren says, hopefully PG staff will respond with help.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

I know this is anecdotal evidence, but a quick review of the latest posts here seem to show many more Mac related issues than Win related.
Could it be that BiaB harmonizes with Win machines better than Mac ? . . . Just a thought.

And yeah, Windows updates and security patches do happen frequently but usually overnight for me. The worst that has happened is whatever programs happen to be running get non-gracefully shut down. But lately I notice there are options to capture any work that wasn't saved; so all has been well.

it was their audio bugs I frequently got, and frequently had to wait ages for a fix

That is your problem. BIAB is not recommended for Sonoma yet and many have problems. Please don't post full crash reports here. If necessary, those can be sent to pGM Support.

You're wrong there. PG Music ships the higher versions on USB Drives—Audiophile comes on a USB 3.0 (aka 3.2 gen 1) HDD only. There is no problem running it from these drives after running the Installer for a few /Library/Application Support files.

The OP told us his problem in the first paragraph which is Sonoma. BIAB 2023 is not ready yet but it's been announced they are working on it..

At the risk of coming off a little cranky, there is no need to give us your resume with every post.

Ahhh, problem identified then....Sonoma. Guess I'll just wait a while. I was wondering why it wasn't installing the actual biab programme

If you've not contacted Support on this directly, do so. Perhaps you can get an advanced heads up on Build 707 which is supposed to be the one they're working on now.

My problem is that if I have to power off the imac ( Sonoma ), I have to reinstall all the RTs which is a real pain. Anyone got any idea how to solve this please ?.
Hi Graham,
I don't understand this question. Having the entire program on a huge external SSD should work great. Also, the log you pasted in does not seem to have anything to do with Band-in-a-Box. There is a problem with the BiaB notation window on Sonoma as others have mentioned, but I don't know if that's what your question is.

Hi Andrew thanks for the post. Apologies for my late reply. My issue is that it won't stay on the HD if I have to remove it. I have to redownload. Just keeps giving me errors trying to install

What won't stay on the HD? What are you redownloading?

all the RTs. When I reconnect the HD I have to redownload for some odd reason. I DON'T have enough space in my main hd to install the main programme.
I use a 2tb normal hd. Only thing I havn't thought of is installing the whole programme onto my icloud drive. Is THAT a possibility ?

When you reconnect your HD, what makes you think you need to "redownload". Be very specific ... "i.e. because when I do this then this, this happens"

Files don't just disappear from a HD for no reason. And no, leave icloud out of this for sure.

OK, thanks....I've got all the rts installed in a new 2TB HD. Every time I've installed the RTs I have to re-install them after removing the HD.
Maybe I could have you take control and do a session that way if that'd be suitable sometime ?
Meantime I've cleared enough space on my main drive to run the programme and am now
downloading the RTs onto my new 2tb ext hd. I'll see how that goes

So, do you have Band-in-a-Box installed on this new 2 TB hard drive then?
You need to stop downloading files that you already have and figure out what's going on.

I'm stumped Andrew, It keeps getting interrupted trying to download. I've deleted all the downloaded RTs. in case there was a problem with the install manager. So, it's a case of starting from scratch again.
Only difference being I've got the main programme running from my main drive if that makes sense ?

I've deleted all the downloaded RTs

Let's distinguish between the downloaded installer packages, and the installed RealTracks content.

Download installer packages
The download installers are realtracks*.pkg files, about 15 or so of them, ranging from 5-40 GB each, that will normally be found in whatever location you chose as your "Download Location" in the Install Manager. The only reason you wouldn't find them there, is if you had the option to "automatically remove downloads once installed" checked. If you have this checked, you should uncheck it.

Installed RealTracks content
These are files in your Band-in-a-Box folder (and RealTracks folder). There are several different types of files for Drums and RealTracks, but some of the main files include R*.st2 files in the Band-in-a-Box/Soloists folder, and files and folders in the Band-in-a-Box/RealTracks folder. The "RealTracks" folder can be quite large because it contains the audio data (.m4a or .aiff files). For this reason, there is a setting in Band-in-a-Box that allows you to store your RealTracks folder on a different hard drive (volume). In other words you are allowed to have your RealTracks folder located somewhere outside your Band-in-a-Box folder. If you are installing a Band-in-a-Box package with the Install Manager you can specify the location of your Band-in-a-Box folder and you can specify the location of your RealTracks folder.

Running Band-in-a-Box and choosing your RealTracks folder
You run Band-in-a-Box by double-clicking on the "Band-in-a-Box.app", located in your Band-in-a-Box folder. /Applications/Band-in-a-Box/Band-in-a-Box.app. Since the default location of your RealTracks folder is IN your Band-in-a-Box folder, that's where Band-in-a-Box will initially be looking for RealTracks. IF you have RealTracks folder in a different location, then you will need to specify that location in the RealTracks Preferences.

Moving Band-in-a-Box from one hard drive to another
A complete Band-in-a-Box UltraPAK install is about 170 GB. If you currently have Band-in-a-Box on your internal hard drive and it's working fine but you want to move it to an external hard drive (which is plugged into the same computer), there is an easy way you can do this. Just create an /Applications folder on the external, and copy the Band-in-a-Box folder from the Applications folder on the internal to the newly created Applications folder on the external - just copy, paste, and wait.

So now that we're on the same page, for your specific situation, you need to:

1. Decide where you want Band-in-a-Box installed. In my opinion, you should put the entire Band-in-a-Box folder on one of your external drives, then there is no confusion about where the various parts are.

2. Now that you've decided that, you need to figure out where you stand. Do you have Band-in-a-Box installed ANYWHERE already? As a sanity check, select each of your Band-in-a-Box folders on your SSD, your 2 TB HDD, and your internal HD, and Get Info (Command+I) on each. What is the size of each? Any of them close to 170 GB, or in the ballpark?

Why don't you reply with the sizes and we'll go from there.

Right, thanks Andrew. ALL biab files have been deleted from my main hd. I'm now downloading the main programme again into it's own 2TB hd where nothing else will go

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
