A new one.

The kind of piano song that I'm hoping will be well represented in BIAB 2024.

For this one, I played piano and strings.
I "programmed" (hand input) the bass.

And the BIAB stuff...
RealTracks in style: 2667:Pedal Steel, Background DreamySingleNote Ev 075
RealTracks in song: 3441:Guitar, Electric, Soloist BritPsycRockMarch Ev 110
RealTracks in song: 1856 Cello, Background PopCountry Ev 085

I've seen some discussion (in Off Topics, I think) that "complained" about getting good solos.
I've always been very happy with the solos I'm able to get from BIAB (find pieces that work and build it).
This one, in particular, I COULD NOT be happier with. It's perfect, I think...
And the steel and cello are perfect compliments for a piano track.

I Love BIAB. Period.

Okay....so...

IT'S YOUR MOVE

what do i do?
i've run out of words
nothing i can say
can undo the hurt
some lessons
only heartbreak can teach
some sins run deeper
than forgiveness can reach
but i'm reaching

it all hangs in the balance
can we still find the groove
   i'll die without you
   but it's your move
   i can barely breathe
   my heart's stopped, too
will you fall in or out, girl
   it's your move
   it's your move

i hit a rough patch
i wasn't thinking straight
i came to my senses
was it too late
i saw the damage
i know that's on me
i pray with all my being
it's not too late
i'm reaching

it all hangs in the balance
can we still find the groove
   i'll die without you
   but it's your move
   i can barely breathe
   my heart's stopped, too
will you fall in or out, girl
   it's your move
   it's your move

And, again...It's Your Move.

Floyd,

Heartbreakingly beautiful... Exquisite lyrics and vocal.

Love the piano. You play so well. Yes, that solo is perfect, as is the pro-mix. All the tracks work.

You are the master!

Hi Floyd,

That first verse is just killer - every word, every line.

Piano sounds terrific - marries nicely with the RTs.

Powerful vocal with the perfect amount of poignancy to convey the despair of the lyrical subject. This shines in every way!

I fully agree with you about getting wonderful lead riffs from just about all the lead (and sometimes the "background)" RTs for the needed riffs. And, as you know, I write in numerous genres. I've never been left wanting as long as I did due diligence in sorting out the RTs and "molding' them as needed.

I've twice been a teacher - I'd grade this an A+. Really nice.

Alan

Floyd, breathtakingly beautiful. Just no words to convey the power of this tune for me. I agree that this soloist sounds like he's playing perfectly to your tune. And just between us, if I could play piano like this I'd never use piano RealTracks. Bravo!

Hi Floyd,

Excellent song and also good piano playing and vocals.

I must admit I was waiting for the bass and drums to come in but that's just me.

Also I would have liked the guitar solo at double the volume and half the reverb to match the vocals volume.

Excellent - would love to hear a remix.

Best Regards
Nigel

floyd,

It's a very moving song. Beautiful!
Great vocals.
It's a wonderful piece with a slow tempo, piano and vocals, and the classic ballad style.
Hand input is very effective for songs like this.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Whew! I gave it a listen in my headphones, and wondered what's this weird resonance I'm hearing? I couldn't figure it out, and no one else mentioned it, so I figured I'd just give the song a listen tomorrow.

Finally, my son walked by, pointed, and said "Dad, you've got the speakers on." blush

All right, with that out of the way...

Lovely. Intimate and close. Piano is dead simple, just like you've been asking for on that other thread. Cello and guitar sound great - the distortion on the guitar adds a nice edge to an otherwise sweet arrangement of sounds. When the strings come in, it widens the sound wonderfully.

Vocal is fantastic, bringing life to the grief-filled lament.

Once again, a master class on showing how it's done! laugh

Ditto on the period! This is wonderfully crafted from the songwriting to the arrangement, band selection (the piano player is my favorite), and the presentation. Hey, wait... I got all the way through the first time, and realized I never heard the bass. Now that's odd for me...

Oh, it's bowing with the strings. What an extraordinary, beautiful song, Floyd. You have such a huge range of goodness.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Floyd...this is certainly a track to be proud of...the piano is the key...the simple metering is the perfect palate for a tender ballad and with the strings (exquisite) and cello...man that melts a heart...the song is quintessential floyd jane! so well written and produced...stylistically one of my favorites of yours...your musicianship captured me on this one for sure! so good!

probably a dated phrase but 'you killed it', Floyd (this is a very good compliment for all you youngin's)! Love the solo BIAB created. It was a nice compliment as you noted to the piano (great job by the way). I also like the placement of the hook in the chorus.

I remember your forum post where you asked for some specific piano RealTracks ... and instead of waiting, you simply upped your piano skills and played them yourself.
Good decision, I like them a lot.
Your song is pretty pure with a sparse arrangement and a voice full of emotion.
Excellent choice.
This song would be the perfect encore for a live performance, just you and the piano and the light of 1000 lighters cell phones.

Your piano part is lovely and fits wonderfully - particularly as the left hand isn't heavy creating a lopsided bass feel.
I like everything about this. It moves from sparse to lushness with just a couple of added elements and then back to bare bones, bare emotions that bear the weight.

Indeed, this guitar solo sounds like it was made for this song. I agree, there's always a good soloist to be found in BIAB. Sometimes it just needs a little regenerating and editing.

So you played the piano yourself? Wow, that sounds really good!
Excellent vocal as always.

Beautiful.

Wow.

One of the best ensemble of instruments I've heard. I always love the cello, and it works so well here. I agree about the guitar solo.

Emotive vocal.

Very nice. You're doing a good job with the piano. I just recently started back playing the piano. Such a fun thing to do. It gives a totally different perspective from the guitar based stuff.

What piano samples/ synth are you using?

I agree that BB gives some really good leads. However I don't think that one in the song was a good fit. The tone was not as compatible with the feel of the song as it should have been. It was too "Carlos" for the song.

Other than that.... Really good job.

Nigel - thanks for listening and for the mention of the song and piano.

I cannot imagine listening to a production like this and having my thoughts be "waiting for bass and drums".
I chose to had a very subtle bass that simply played root notes. Under the piano and so subtle that you might have to Listen to hear it. I stand by that choice as a producer. The piano handles the bass just fine. The piano also handles the percussive side. If you were going to add drums to this, I'd be curious and interested in what you think that might be and what that might add.

Double the volume on the solo? That would make it so loud you couldn't hear anything else.
As far as I am concerned, the guitar solo is at the perfect level (the same level as the vocal).
Perhaps some weirdness in your listening environment causes the solo to seem low to you.
And the tone is perfect. Rich, emotional, crying. Just what I wanted it to be.

I've been steadily producing songs for over a decade (and actually started 40 years ago). In all that time and all the songs that I have produced, I am more satisfied with this production than any I've ever done.
There will not be a re-mix.

Wow, really like this one, Floyd!

Very nice work on the piano, and love the vocal, very emotive. Also like the strings.

I agree the guitar solo works well. What I often find with the BIAB generated solos I hear on here, the solo can be very good but the transition out of the solo back to the verse can be weak, ending on a note that doesn't support the vocal. But, that's not the case here.

Beautiful song, very much enjoyed.

The Bass is actually simply the root note played on the beat. At a fairly low level. Just to give some support to the piano (who really handles the bass).
It's there-if-you-listen. That is what I was after.

Really beautiful - lyrics, arrangement, singing, melody especially in the chorus. So light arrangement and gentle mix, I really appreciate this right after making a song filled with guitars and mixed to the max... that's why I was expecting the drum battery to fill the end like in a classic ballad, but I'm glad this was different - instruments perfectly balanced with the mood. And yes, that solo guitar has a heartbreking tone, perfect choice... And I enjoyed how you sang the title so emotionally.

Beautiful!

“ i can barely breathe
   my heart's stopped, too”

That so well describes heartache, doesn’t it? You sing the lyric with so much feeling and nuance that we get the same feeling we do from being immersed in a great novel.

Your piano sounds great … stark yet fully supporting the sadness of the lyric.  The little right hand touches are perfecto and the helds are room filling. And the tone is great and it all has a lovely soundscape - it fills up the stereo spectrum in an excellent manner.

Those BiaB guys fit perfectly..

Nice cover art!

You set the piano on fire, sir, and exited the stage! 😊

Floyd:

Pretty tune. Deft hand on production as always—nice choices going more than less with lots of space. That really makes the guitar solo pop. I’m one of those who think the BIAB solos can be hit or miss. But they always seem to work best for me on these types of ballads, it does here.

Really like that piano work as well.

Good stuff!

Excellent vocal as always.

Hi Floyd,

I listened to a very touching song. And I liked it!
It's always nice if you can use a chello in a 'sad' song.
And your vocals are always great, this song is no exeption to that. Not at all.
When listening to your song (again), I followed the piano.
It was very nice, and like Rob, I wondered if you played it yourself.
On the other hand, I would have liked a little more expression in that piano playing, but of course that's a matter of taste.
But the song itself is very touching, as I wrote in my first line!

Hans

What piano samples/ synth are you using?

I agree that BB gives some really good leads. However I don't think that one in the song was a good fit. The tone was not as compatible with the feel of the song as it should have been. It was too "Carlos" for the song.

Other than that.... Really good job.

On this one the piano is layered. One track using TruePianos EQ'd to mainly highs panned right, one track using TruePianos with the mids accented a bit left of center and the new EZKeys2 Grand for the bottom, panned left.
The guitar tone is perfect for the song. The tone is far too ragged with too much bite to label it "Carlos". His was much more round and smooth. If you're gonna ping me on tone, you might consider being more accurate.

Thanks, Dave....

And yes, that solo guitar has a heartbreking tone, perfect choice... And I enjoyed how you sang the title so emotionally.

Hi floyd.

This is such a good song.
I listened to it a couple of weeks ago with the thought in mind that I'd "come back tomorrow and write a comment."
Well, a few tomorrows came and went and I didn't get back. Sorry.
Everything about this song is perfect.
You have all the instruments sitting very comfortably together and your performance is the icing on this fine musical cake.
I love what you've done and I love how you've done it.
Music doesn't get any better than this.

In relation to the piano track... Recently, I've been playing around with creating user tracks. They're quite amazing things. If you want, I'm happy to try and create a piano user track for you from your piano accompaniment. I can't guarantee how successful I'll be but I'll do my best. If you'd like me to see what I can come up with, please send me a message and I'll tell you what is needed for creating a track. One of the beauties of user tracks is that you can build them up bit by bit. It's not necessary to do all the chords at once. New chords can be added over time as they are need. If you're interested in finding out about UserTracks, there are a couple of great PG Music videos at the below URL.

Much Appreciated!!!!
Thanks for mentioning the piano...

Really like that piano work as well.

Good stuff!

Thanks, Hans.
I just taught myself to play piano this past year. Hopefully, I will get more expressive as I continue.

Thanks, Noel.
Since I just started learning piano (or at least getting to the point that I feel I can record it) the idea of doing a User Track strikes me as premature.
I would imagine that would turn out to be a rather one-dimensional UT.
Plus - I go down too many other rabbit holes to add yet another.
The thought is certainly appreciated....
Merry Christmas, my friend...

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
