The Older I Get The Less I Get It

Our last song (Chaos Of Change) was blatantly pessimistic regarding the “state of affairs” so here’s one that is less so and with an attempt at whimsy. Janice’s two outro lines are quoted from Bud’s wise mentor when he (Bud) started his career in behavioral health services thinking he could quickly change things. 😁 Thanks to Peter for the guitar tracks and, as always, to PG Music. Your time to listen and perhaps comment are much appreciated. The lyric is below tech stuff and on SoundCloud.

Janice: lead/BGV/harmony vocals, arrangement, melody, and progression (yeah, there’s an A major). Izotope Nectar for all processing.

Peter: guitar solos/fills and arrangement and mix input.

Bud: lyric, mix and mastering

For the tech inclined:

Drums: Nashville Radio Shuffle > Waves CLA Drums (comped from multiple tracks)
Snare: From above kit > Waves Magma BB Tubes > Ozone Impact > Logic Pro ChromaVerb
Cymbal: From above kit > Logic Pro ChromaVerb

Bass: RealTrack 3567 Nashville Radio Shuffle > Logic EQ > Waves Bass Rider > Waves Magma BB Tubes

Rhythm Guitar: RealTrack 654 Texas Boogie DI > Logic Pro Brownout Amp/mic/speakers

Piano: RealTrack 2124 Acoustic, Rhythm Country Shuffle John > Waves CLA Unplugged > Ozone Imager

Mastering: Ozone EQ > Ozone Multi-band compression > Ozone Imager > Ozone Maximizer > Ozone Tonal Balance > Logic Pro Loudness Meter

THE OLDER I GET

The right says the left are all wusses
The left says the right is heartless
Blue tie man says the climate's changing
Red tie man says no, they're all lying

CHORUS
you can get lonely in the middle ground
it’s a desert that can bury your spirit
Strip away the labels, are we so different
I reckon the older I get the less I get it

The doc says eat this diet and live to 90
Next doc says no I'd never make it to 50
I read on the net buy gold and never worry
Then my broker says you'll go broke in a hurry

REPEAT CHORUS

Buy local organic, save the small farmer
No, save your money it's not the answer
Talking head says a pipeline'll cause a spill
but the other one just says drill baby drill

REPEAT CHORUS

Outro
A wise friend told me to be like grass, I said oh please
He said keep firm roots but let your blades sway in the breeze

As I age I grow to care so little for so much and so much for so little. That, and The older I get the colder I get are two things I seem to say a lot these days.

WOW, what a cool song. And I really dig the way you sing it with the occasional tongue-in-cheek wink, Janice. Very uplifting sounds, and, Peter, your guitar is outstanding. Bud, I hear and am so impressed with your work in there. So far I'm on my 3rd listen, and you guys are alwys on my playlist. Thanks for another wonderful listen --listens.

I love the virtual dialog Janice has with herself...what a great idea [Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]
It's _still_ pessimistic, but the cheerful mood gives it a more positive character... I like this contrast.

As always, great work from the three of you.
Enjoyed the listen.

Janice, Bud & Peter,

Loved it! A great song and a great arrangement. Janice kills the vocal and the back & forth piece is genius. Peter's guitar is singing and completely in the groove.

The mix / production is outstanding. It sounds great cranked up!

What else could anyone want!

Cool song, folks!

There's lots of truth in those words. I'm one of those middle grounders, and yep, it's a bit desolate here at times.

Loved the way ya'll put this together. And the way Janice handled the vocals here is just so danged good. Not exactly call and response, but yet some of that flavor. Pretty hip band behind the vocals, Peter leading the way so nicely, as he always does.

This is a little different from your regular post - nice and refreshing! Kinda Big Band, Pop/Rock - minus the big band. Very cleverly orchestrated!

Really nice!

Love it! laugh

This is fun song with attitude. Janice's vocal is a joy to listen to, and the back-and-forth dialog works great. That guitar solo was perfect.

Punchy, in your face mix with an arrangement that bops along. Excellent!

On a tangent, I recall reading quite a bit on how conservatives and liberals respond to risk and change differently. We have a different emotional response to the same set of facts, but we're utterly convinced that our beliefs are logical and rational... because they feel right. So as long as we feel we're right, we don't feel any need to change.

This was driven home by a friend who was had paranoid delusions bolstered by auditory hallucinations. He said that if anyone else told him about the things he was telling me about, he's say they were "crazy". (His word, not mine. As you're more than aware, "crazy" is perhaps the most un-helpful term to use when talking about mental illness).

But because it was happening to him, and it felt real, he knew it was real.

Fortunately, I'm entirely immune to this sort of emotionally-driven behavior. wink

J&B&P...

A Good Balanced write. Nice job of allowing each side to pick their lines. That's a hard thing to do.
Peter's lines are nicely balanced, too! With a nice bite.
Janice is her Always-Pro self with the added spice of Fun - where she is always at her best.

Do we even have to talk about Bud's mixes anymore? We just need a stamp [mix]Perfect[/mix]

Your title has two meanings. I had thought your song was going to be about a completely different subject. grin

I thought your "Chaos of Change" was spot on. Same thing with this song. I'm with you in the middle.

Excellent vocal and harmony. I especially like the "ooo, ooo" BGV.

Production sounds clean and balanced as usual.

This is a very interesting and unique write regarding the divisiveness in today’s world. The vocal is well thought out with a little twist of humor thrown in. I am pretty sure that most listeners are sick of the craziness and at some point shake their heads and smile away the pain. The arrangement is very good and Peter’s guitar is very complimentary. As always top notch studio work on the production side. Reminds me of my old definition of a pessimist - an optimist with experience. A great listen with an important message, Tom

This was verry funny listen, upbeat and nicely swinging. Many nice lines in the lyrics, maybe I don't get or misunderstand some lines, but that's the problem when getting older smile I smiled especially at drill baby drill laugh Anyway, nicely in the middle ground. You are having much fun with the vocals, and it makes the song true pleasure to listen to. The mix and the band are rocking all worries away (until the next lawn mower).

Fun, funny & punny too.
There's so much to like and love that I'd have to quote the entire lyric, every lick and each vocal nuance.
THEN there's Bud's mix n master to comment on.
100% wonderful
100% on point
100% love it.

Great song! The middle ground may sometimes feel like a desert, but at least you miss the divide and conquer!

Good stuff with a great hook. Nice contrast that captures a lot of what we see, hear and read these days. Great vocal work; like those talk back aspects and cool oohs. Well done folks.

"We have a different emotional response to the same set of facts ..."
In a time long ago Walter Cronkite presented the daily facts in a concise 30 minutes. Sadly today folks can find their own set of "facts" and reside in that bubble.
John Adams said, “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”
So much for that nowadays.

We all three appreciate your review,

Hi Bud, Janice and Peter,

I look at your lyrics with satisfaction!
In spite of your own conclusion I would say: the older we get the more we see it.
I don't really know if that is true, but at least you did in the song.
And I think we are with more on that...

From the lyrics to the song itself: I liked them a lot. I also liked the vocal harmonies and the 'in between' yellings (Oohoo, ahaa).
Andi wrote it so nicely and briefly in his post. I need more words, I'm afraid, so I stick to his:
Good song, good melody, lovely (but sour) lyrics and ironical vocals.
So, an Ace!
Still I think I forgot something, can't figure out what. But it must be another compliment...

Nice days ahead,
Hans

Hi Janice, Bud and Peter.

This is such a great song.

[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Janice... Your vocals are awesome, awesome, awesome and then some. I really, really love the "talking to yourself" structure of the lyrics. I've never once thought to do this. You've taught an old dog a new trick. So, I'd better warn you, if a song appears in Users Showcase that has an internal monologue set up, you'll know exactly what inspired its creation. Some people might look at that as "stealing ideas" while other might see it as "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery". From my perspective, though, and just like the song, I'm more in the middle ground and neither of those is really correct. My view is "never look a gift horse in the mouth and always acknowledge the giver of the gift".

Bud... Absolutely stunning lyrics. Every word is so true. The tongue-in-cheek humour approach to dealing with really difficult topics worked well for me. It's such a good way of handling confronting topics and getting people to think. This is a great write and an equally great arrangement. You have a fantastic knack for getting everything to sit together so sweetly.

Peter... You guitar work is fantastic and your solos leave no doubt in the listener's mind that you are one heck of a guitarist. I love what you did.

I wish you all a Happy Christmas and a fantastic 2024.
--Noel

Thanks for those comments Tom and the support over the years. Love that definition of a pessimist 😀 Really glad you liked the arrangement and thanks for the production comment. I can only wish my production chops could even approach your level!

You are having much fun with the vocals, and it makes the song true pleasure to listen to. The mix and the band are rocking all worries away (until the next lawn mower).

Thanks Janne, You made us smile! It was a fun project.

--Noel

Wow, what a great song and performance.

I can't say I agree with the lyrics though, but only because I have NEVER gotten it.

smile

Happy New Year.

Thanks David! Hmmmm … perhaps getting it would be a dark place indeed. 😀

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
