This is a re-write of a song I did 12 years ago with much of the lyric by Dottie Corley.

She contacted me recently wanting to do another version.
This has been a bit of a marathon as every time I finished it she wanted to try something else or a different tempo crazy.
I eventually came to a full stop so here it is as it now is..
Is anything too loud or not loud enough?

Vic

Tracks are:
Drums - Pop modern groove and Real drums Nashville outlaw
Bass - Electric modern country sync
Guitars - 676, 1684, 2828, steel 2542
Mandola - 3155 and Mandolin 820 bluegrass.

Wanted Man © 2023 Dottie Corley & Vic Arnold

V1:
Midnight I'm creeping hat and boots in hand.
I'm ducking out her door. I'm a wanted man.
Ex lovers track my trail ... all across the USA.
Settling down is hard time. More than I can take
Same old grind all the time, like an outlaw on the run.
Escaping like Houdini. Stealing hearts without a gun.
Chorus:
I'm a wanted man, I sniff for traps
Like a phantom wolf I leave no tracks.
Cloak-and-dagger Romeo. Always in demand.
Catch me if you can ... I’m a wanted man
Inst.
V2:
Waitress in the diner, we tangoed once before
I feel my fame has reached her, but never can be sure.
Tilt my hat; flip my collar as I try to sneak away
A hand grabs my coat tail now she’s wailing out my name
Same old grind all the time, like an outlaw on the run.
Escaping like Houdini. Stealing hearts without a gun.
Chorus:
Chorus2:
I’m a wanted man. I sniff the traps
Like a phantom wolf I leave no tracks
Old flames still on fire. Catch me if you can.
Every body wants a piece of me?
I’m still a wanted man

Vic, everything sounds about right to me. Very cool song. Love the minor key framework, the husky vocals and the haunting harmonies. Creates a tangible sense of the dark side of being a "wanted man". The Knopfler-style guitar is really, REALLY good, but at times it sounds like it's too far forward and competing with the vocals. That would be my only possible suggestion for more balance. Enjoyed the listen...nice work!!

Vic, your backing band fits your lyrics perfectly.
Super production, everything is perfect!
Great vocal.
Are you wanted dead or alive?
Super song, one of your best.

You're right about the licks being a little too up front.
I've been chopping and changing this so long I stopped hearing what was in front of my ears.
I have now cut those licks down to size (I hope).

Good song!

Love the lyrics, and man, your vocal is perfect for this.

Had a read through the comments, I didn't hear the original mix but the guitar is sitting right where it needs to be now I think.

Nicely done, Vic, enjoyed.

Good song with good lyrics and vocals, this is pretty cool Dire Straits stuff.

The mix itself has some technical issues:
  • the entire mix is shifted to the left - just switch between stereo and mono and you'll notice the difference (assuming your audio hardware isn't faulty)
  • there is some vocal distortion on the left side, which may disappear once the mix is properly centered.

But those issues aside, I love your song.

Sounds good - sets the mood nicely.

But when the backing vocal comes in, it sounds the combined vocal distorts. That's likely what B.D. is noting.

Other than that... good place to stop. smile

Hi Vic ...

Beyond cool! Great lyric and choice of backing tracks. That lead guitar is spot on. I like everything about this one.

I can imagine Marty Robbins having done this one as an inclusion in his "Big Iron" album. Also, I can hear Johnny Cash doing a version of it, but I think the Marty Robbins scenario would be the better. I'm a huge Marty Robbins fan. I don't throw his name around carelessly. This song earns that respect.

This is my favorite by you up 'til now. Excellent!

Alan

Vic, this is a very cool song. I like the lyrics and you sang it very well. When I first listened I immediately heard the vocal distortion but thought it might be my aging ears, so I decided to wait and see if anyone else mentioned it. I’m not sure what the issue is but I am sure you can fix it. Regardless I did really like it, Tom

Cool story. Love the lyrics, Dottie. [You can tell her, Vic. smile ] Your vocals are the best, Vic. You are the perfect story teller. Alan mentioned Marty Robbins, and that's the first thing I thought of --that and Rosa's Cantina. Much fun.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi B.D.
I must admit, apart from the slight vocal distortion which I hope I have now fixed, I can't hear the panning imbalance you mentioned.
The drums, vocal and bass are centred. Lead instruments are panned just off centre left and right respectively. Strumming and Mandola are panned 50 left and right respectively and the harmony vocals are panned at 40 left and right. the only slight weight to the left (to my ears) seems to be the snare drum.
Thanks for the comment and tip off to the vocal distortion.

Hey, Vic:

Well, I like the sound of this a lot . . . the vocal, the production all sound good. It does seem to lean left a tad as BD noted, but I’m listening on a lap top, so not the best to judge. I’m hesitant to say it . . . but out of the many songs you’ve done that I’ve loved . . . lyrically this doesn’t resonate for me, and I’m not sure why. Just a subjective thing for me . . . and others seem to love it . . . so such is music.

Hi Al.
Marty was a master of that kind of song.
Back in the sixties the band I was in done a few of his: Big Iron, El Paso, Devil Woman, Ribbon of Darkness etc.
Thank you for the encouraging words.

Aging ears are a big problem, Tommy.
A few months ago I was told I'd lost about 25% high frequency hearing in my right ear and 15% low frequency in my left.
I was given some earbuds to compensate but I'm finding it hard to adjust to the new rush of sound.
I also forget to wear them. frown

Thank you for your comments. I hear them ok. smile

Actually the lyrics are the bone of contention to Dottie and I.
She wanted to use all her lyrics but they didn't fit with the melody I had so they had to be changed.
Not sure if she has forgiven me yet and she is asking around for someone else to do a different version.
That will be interesting.

Hi Deej.
I know what you’re saying about the lyric.
This one was a case of too many cooks in the kitchen. I knew that at the start.
Our original lyric had been put through the mincer of a songwriter’s forum by Dottie. I did manage to make a few changes but it remains the work of multi writers.
Thanks for the comment.

That’s a good collab, Vic.

Your vocals sit well in the mix and the band gives a good C&W vibe to the song.

Well done!

Hi Vic,

Just listened to your wanted song and I read all the comments.
I also read about your loss of high frequency in your right ear.
To start with that, you are not the only one. I have it too, but in my left ear.
I always compensate that frequency a bit in my mixes. But It's always a bit of a guess.
Good news: my right ear is ok ;-)

Back from those ear things to your song. a good one, Vic!
I liked it very much. At first the words you used in the lyrics and also the funny story;
The guitarplay was (of course) very good. They were pleasing for the ears (here they are again...).
And it had a good, straight forward tempo. Did hear a bit distortion in the vocals, but I thought that was on purpose.
It suits well!
Yes, you are a wanted man for sure!
Take care on Christmas eve...

Excellent tune Vic. Cool lyric and vocal. Song has an excellent groove. I too got a bit of vocal distortion. and the vocal is sitting at about 11 o'clock on my monitors. Just minor nits overall and very cool song..

Thanks Scott.
I'm still adjusting it but my daw channel monitor shows one harmony 9 o'clock and the other at 3 o'clock.
The main vocal is centre at 12 o'clock which is where I want them. I just took the volumes down a tad to try and get rid of the distortion.
I may come back to the vocals and re do them if that doesn't work.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
