Im trying to figure out what plays the midi sounds from inside band in a box. there is an option to ( as im on a mac,) choose some apple midi sound player that plays GM sounds i assume but i have a Roland Fantom keyboard and other hardware synths that can accept midi in and hve incredible high quality sounds . Can you get biab to send the midi tracks data out? i dont want it to play the synthmaster that comes with biab or the apple option is there not a simple send midi out. I know i can plug any midi keyboard into the computer and biab recieves those notes and plays and record midi in, but what about the midi output as an option?

Yes, this should be possible.
From the MIDi / Audio Drivers Setup Help:
Quote
"MIDI Output Driver: Select a driver for MIDI Output. This could be the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth, a sound card synth, or a MIDI interface connected to an external hardware synthesizer. Note that the MIDI Output driver won’t be used (except for MIDI Thru) when "Use VST/DXi Synth" is checked.

Perhaps the easiest way to configure Band-in-a-Box is to press the [Run Driver Wizard] button. The Run Driver Wizard dialog will take you step-by-step through the process of auditioning and selecting an appropriate driver. This assumes that the appropriate Windows sound drivers are installed and correctly configured."

So you need to firstly disable "Use VSTi/DXi Synth".

Probably also set the Synthesizer / Sound card to General MIDI.

You could also ask this question in the Mac section of the forums, as I'm sure there will be people there who can advise directly how to do this with the Mac.

I use the Windows version, not the Mac and there are differences, so I can try to help only from my experience and the BIAB for Mac manual. BTW, you don't mention which version, i.e., year+build that you have and that sometimes can be important.

I'm pretty confident that both will output MIDI to a external hardware MIDI player.

First, there's a tutorial +++ here +++ that may help. The title may mislead a little, but it does cover external devices.

Try here in the BIAB for Mac 2023 manual:
Basic MIDI setup is on p9; more detail on page 268 (Chapter 14).

Yes, you need to:

A) Open the Mac Core MIDI/Audio setup. There is a menu item in Band-in-a-Box, Options | Core Audio/MIDI Setup. This opens the Audio Devices window, and you need to find the MIDI settings window. Usually this is under Window menu | Show MIDI Studio.

This area represents your physical setup. E.G. you want to see an interface with MIDI cables connecting your keyboard. Add an External device if not already present (MIDI Studio menu | Add External). Drag MIDI cables from the OUT triangle on your interface to the IN on your keyboard and vice versa.

B) With that configured, go back to Band-in-a-Box, Options | MIDI Input/output ports. Note that you will need to have plugged in your MIDI keyboard/interface prior to launching Band-in-a-Box. It should be an option in the MIDI input and output ports.

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option

Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!

Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
