Wow I actually searched for this one and nothing turned up in the program or here in the first three pages!

How do you indicate No Chord for the bar?
Something like N/C etc?

Where there is N/C in notation and BIAB is totally silent for the bar.

Thanks!

Can you just use C. then on the next bar put the chord you want.
Or F5 mute all instruments.
Or Audio Edit > Master track > volume automation.

What you need to look up is "Rests, shots and holds". You are wanting BIAB to rest.

The easiest way to do this is using Chord Options (ALT+F5). This is also found by right clicking on the chord sheet. If you are entering chords by simply typing them, type a period after the chord name.

For example C. tells the chord to rest and nothing will be heard until the next chord symbol.

The period will rest all the instruments. Using the Chord Options dialogue will allow you to choose which instrument you want to rest and which instruments you want to play.

Thanks Noel. I don't know if these suggestions will do the trick.

In my case I'm not so much interested in the band stopping play for the bar (although I'd like that too)
but more to have an indication in the notation that no chord is to be played (so no one accidentally continues the
chord from the previous bar).

You usually see NC or N/C in music to indicate No Chord.
Does BIAB have any notation like this or similar?

If not, I may have to write it in manually.

Sorry to say that this has been mentioned in the program for decades but was never implemented. There are chord shortcuts that can be typed such as J for Maj7, and there is one for NC (no chord) but it doesn't work. You can see it in /bb/Data/pgshortc.txt

I mention this to the developers every few years.

But even if it worked, we would want it to say NC in the notation, instead of C. as suggested for the workaround.

Yes, many reasonable music related items are requested. Unfortunately, we don't have any control over what is delivered.

Mentions of C. may be a bit subtle for people new to BIAB.
The important part of that is the dot (a rest), not the C (the chord).
There are several neat tricks that can be done this way, or via Alt+F5.

Sometimes, writing it in manually is the quickest and easiest way. That's the approach that I would use. Alternatively, it is possible to add text boxes to BIAB. It's called "Insert Section Text" and is accessed via Editable Notation Mode. When in Editable Notation Mode, right-click above the staff where you would like the text to occur, and then select "Insert Section Text Event". If you need to edit the text, there is an "Edit" option in the right-click menu as well.

P.S. If you are running BIAB in full-screen view, you can access the same view as shown in the image by pressing CTRL+T (it's a toggle between the two views).

Thanks Matt. It's a pity it has never been implemented. Perhaps sometime in the decades to come a sympathetic programmer will unofficially implement it and leak the secret keyboard shortcut to get it to work. smile

Yes in the end I may just do it manually.
I tried the method you suggested above but the N/C text is much lower than the chord notation.
I didn't see a way to adjust the height of the N/C text.

BTW how do you insert the .png files to the forum? What is the technique?

To adjust the height...

1) Enter into Editable Notation Mode as before.

2) Right click about the stave and choose, "Edit Section Text" form the right-click menu.

3) Select the text event you want to edit (#1 on the image).

4) Choose "Edit" (#2).

Once in the Edit window, it's possible to adjust...

5) Whether the text has a box around it or not (#3).

(6) The vertical position of the text event (#4). The more negative the value, the higher the position.

(7) What the text even contains (#5).

(8) Horizontal location (#6)... this is in the format Bar, Beat, Tick (part of beat). Keep in mind that each beat consists of 120 ticks. So a setting of 1 2 60 means the that the even would be horizontally located in Bar 1 and midway between beats 2 and 3 (that is, 60 ticks past beat 2).

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
