I got the idea for this one from FB where a fellow Michigander posted about being in the tropics of Florida. I hope you like it, folks, but tell me if otherwise and why not. Thick-skinned songwriter who keeps trying to get better at my craft. As usual, lyrics are in the description of the SoundCloud page.

Great song on all fronts, lyrically, vocally, structure and mix.

Dewey, really tight write, with plenty of hooks and energetic vocals. Cool harmonies, too. To me, this song is all about the vocals, and the band does a nice job staying out of the way. Super job!

Hi, Dewey.

I couldn't say that there's any market for this, but this has all the hallmarks of your other songs: well sung, catchy, good lyrics and a solid arrangement.

My brain refused to accept the portmanteau "tropic-call", but that's me, not you.

Fun pop!

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

What a great feel and a fun story, Dewey. Your excellent signature vocal always makes every song something to hear. You sprinkle these with hook after hook to keep the listen wanting more. Play it again. Cool title, too.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Ron, I appreciate you listening and I never really thought about the 'band...staying out of the way' when picking a style and mixing but I will for sure keep it in mind from here on. Thanks for the tip!

David, I'm with you in that I don't know how this song would be marketed. My guess is that most of us songwriters get an idea and write it then consider the marketing prospects after the fact. It's in our blood to get the write out first, wouldn't you agree? Thank you so much for listening and sharing your thoughts.

Dewey,

A good write. Appropriate backing. Well sung.
Very well done.

If there is a "market" for this type song (if a cut is the end-game) it gets smaller all the time. The 70's and 80's saw a lot them. The 90's still served them up on occasion. They don't show up much these days. That makes this a tough (limited) pitch.
"Thick-skinned songwriter who keeps trying to get better at my craft."
I, of course, admire the sentiment in this statement (all of it). And there is a good amount of "craft" displayed in the writing. If "clever" is the goal, I'm not sure you could "improve" there.
My suggestion (and this is VERY subjective) is to work at writing that evokes an emotion from the listener (not just a chuckle).

Still....solid.

Great input, Floyd, and, unfortunately for me, I agree with your assessment of the pitchability of this song and many others I write. Small chuckles and a roll-your-eyes smile are probably the emotions most of my songs evoke, so although they are emotions, it is not the artist-cut kind. Having said that, Brad Paisley and the late Toby Keith had several of these songs but - as you noted - they were back in the day and aren't 'sexy' these days. Regardless, I get my songwriting kicks from attempting clever plays on words so these types of songs will probably continue to be the kind I end up writing most times. Not willing to stop pitching these when I can either. You never know, every once in a while the old becomes new again!

Thanks for the kind words on my song, Floyd, you know I respect and always appreciate your ear and comments.

Na zdrowie!

Good song. I agree with the things Floyd said.

One one of those reels on FB I saw a couple of guys discussing writing for the modern country artist and they mentioned "clever" songs but not in a good kind of way when it comes to pitching to todays radio market. Emotion wins the day.

That said, I liked the song and the imagery you put into it. It would make a cool video.

Hey Andy,

Thank you for the ear and comment! Michigan is the same right now; it's cool and gray, so I get it. To be honest, I'd still rather spend year-round in this climate and take the gray with the great weather. Love East Anglia too (my wife is a Canadian-Brit).

Dewey, I was smiling all the way through this catchy yacht rock ride. Kenny Chesney couldn’t sing this any better than you! Creative idea and the usual well crafted clever lyric make this a fun and entertaining listen. I’m a fan, Tom

With the streaming market now days there are sub genres within sub genres.
Meaning a niche market exists for about any song that is well done like yours.

"While I was waiting for a tow truck in a snow bank
Saw an ad for online dating on my phone
Started searchin' for a match in the Florida Keys
With the wealthy, desperate, cougar filter on"

Well that grabbed us from the get go.

And by well done we mean, creative lyric, fine vocal and an excellent mix.

Your tunes always have an immediately engaging feel ... catchy is the much used word smile

Kudos!

Hi Dewey,

I enjoyed this very much.

Good song, good lyrics, great beat and well sung.

Minor suggestion: How about an instrumental solo to give it a touch more light and shade. I'm sure there are plenty of quality twangy Guitar soloists in the BIAB Real Tracks.

Excellent work.

Best Regards
Nigel

Hi Dewey,

Ok, if you're serious about wanting feedback I'll take a stab at this.

The portmanteau didn't bother me one bit but I think it could be implemented differently.

To give the song some really strong verse-chorus variation, I would stretch that part out, even the words tropi-caaaaaaaallllllllllll me...blah blah blah

I mean reeeaaaaally drag that out.

I actually think it could be a crowd pleaser too but with a different style.

The fact that you're singing about a tropical subject is crying out for more of a Jimmy Buffett type arrangement instead of Billy Ray Cyrus, that was the disconnect for me not the title or the lyrics.

I think if you had a more of a Jimmy Buffett type approach that was laid back and easy and less Billy Ray Cyrus it would be more comfortable and easy to get into, and then if you got into a chorus where tropi-caaaaall me (woo-hooo!) was really stretched out there might actually be a market for it because it could be a country or trop rock radio song. Troprock is really big right now actually, and this would work in that genre but that particular style you're using is kind of dated.

Also I assume that tropi-call was the username of the person on the dating site and so when you sing it you're making a reference back to her, and it's not a portmanteau per se, you're actually referencing her ID on the website.

So if that were done in a more Jimmy Buffett style I think that it would make people laugh and you could have some traction with this one.

Those are my thoughts since you asked it for serious feedback.

David, as a member of NSAI, you know I'm serious about getting honest feedback - both constructive and good. Based on the feedback from several folks (within and outside of this forum), I plan to pitch this one as-is for now (except for a one-word addition and line switch in the chorus that someone suggested to me). I initially searched for a trop rock style as you suggested but they all seemed to take away from the message - ironically, steel drums and reggae feel was a bad fit to my ears.

Regarding the id of the subject the username is not "Tropi-call" me and you're the first one to suggest it was confusing so, pending further feedback, I think I'll keep it as-is for now.

Thanks for listening and taking the time to give a thorough review!

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
