Better Then Never on Soundcloud
Better Then Never on YouTube

A song about calling it quits. It never actually uses the title in the lyrics. A short time after they first met she said their relationship was better than ever –better than she ever imagined. Well, this song was written about them a few months later.

Style is _BURN.STY (Burn Bluesy Rock)

RealTracks in style: 2905:Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BrightBluesyPopColin Ev 100
RealTracks in style: 691:Guitar, Acoustic, Strumming AcRockBright Ev 120

RealDrums in Song: TexMexCountryEv8^4-ShkScr,ShHB4R

Bill Davis (zydecoal) played the pedal steel, and I sang and played bass.

Better Then Never

In the silence from the shouting aftermath a thought resurfaces to mind.
Something that you said when we first fell in love, but that was so far back in time.
Now the words become so jumbled and the meaning rearranged.
We seem to just go on as if there's nothing wrong,
but the words have somehow changed.

Better than ever turned better been never, We never had a chance from the start.
Some people say it's still better than never. It depends on who you are.

When the meaning changed and things were not the same
our love was somehow turned around.
Everything we try seems another way to prove we lost the love we found.
We should hear our song is changing, and rewrite it to a fade.
We tried our best and failed. Our love boat simply sailed. Our course is clearly laid.

Better than ever turned better been never, We never should've lasted this long.
Some people say it's still better than never. I'll bet all those people are wrong.

When I'm honest in the quiet of night, I tell myself that we're done.
I wake up every day wonderin' how I'm gonna say I don't think I'm your one.

You remember how you told me once you'll know
when we should go our separate ways?
Well, what that seems to say is you didn't expect to grow
to bloom with me in our old age.
Well, the time is now upon us to begin our new life phase.
Maybe it's the end, but we could still be friends. Let's go out in a blaze.

Better than ever turned better been never, We both know we've reached the end.
Some people say it's still better than never. So maybe we'll be better friends.

Marty,

Great lyrics and a great delivery... Love the way you really get into the groove of these blues / rock pieces.

Some excellent pedal steel by Bill and an awesome mix overall.

You continue to produce some of the best music around here.

Marty...first off, I love the track you produced here...man that was a great arrangement, instrument selection and mix!...you know how to take heartbreak and turn it into a pleasant experience...at least for us listeners...light hearted music for a lost and lonely hearted song...your positivity is amazing my friend! I really liked when you added the harmony lines...honestly, your songs are so well written, produced and performed and this is no exception!

Yet another really excellent song Marty! The main verses, chorus and arrangement all flow perfectly together. I really liked the video, too, as each image went so well with the individually lyrics.

Thanks so much, Bob. Can't say I agree with that last line though. So many times I'll hear songs on here and ask myself why do I even do this. Some of you guys are way over the top good at this. My answer to that I can't help it.

Thanks, Dan, and, man, I'm diggin' what you're doing with synth vocals now, too. This one isn't a heartbreak song. They had great tmes before they realized it wasn't so great anymore. They are still friends living in the same town with their own families and white-picket fences, both enriched by the learning experience. At least that's what I imagine.

Fantastic production Marty! There's so much in here to like, the drums the steel the guitars, it's all top notch. Sure liked your vocals on this, and loved that hook!

Hi, Marty.

Cool write, nice arrangement that fits together nicely. As usual, well sung.

The percussion was a highlight for me - there's all sorts of cool sounds happening here.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Hi Marty.

This sounds really great.
I love the writing, the arrangement and the production.
Your lyrics are excellent. The standout for me was Verse 2 where you said...

Quote
Everything we try seems another way to prove we lost the love we found.
We should hear our song is changing, and rewrite it to a fade.
We tried our best and failed. Our love boat simply sailed. Our course is clearly laid.
When you sang, "we lost the love we found" it really hit home.
Those words were very powerful and they setup the last line of the verse so that it really resonated and made me think a lot.

Musicianship sparkles everywhere in this creation.

I took this as a piece of delayed gratification Marty. I saw it, I wanted to listen straight away but decided to wait until I had a clear mind and expectations has peaked.
The TexMex elements work wonderfully with the added steel and, of course, your bass.
Lyrically this is a cool rumination of the cycle of relationships carried by an ace melody.
Cool vocal - though perhaps a little too far back in the mix.
Ace steel.
Another classic Martypiece from the fecund furry.
I enjoyed it heaps.

Cheers

Your optimism shines through even in a breakup song - for example the last line:

“Some people say it's still better than never. So maybe we'll be better friends.”

Man there is enough lyric there for three of our writes! smile

Your vocals and bass are most excellent.

We like the feel of the Tex Mex drums and the accordion. The pedal steel sounds great

And that cool vid that must’ve taken quite a bit of time.

Enjoyed it!

Thanks so much, Chay. Using CoPilot, although slow, can be fun. Sometimes I just type in the lyric line and it gives me some suggestions --which it also then suggests embellishments.

Thanks, Carl. Work. You're probably too young to remember Maynard G. Krebs, but "work." We know music is fun, and the only work in the music business is done by roadies. smile Joking aside, thank you.

The subject matter darker than what I usually hear in a Marty song. What a band you have put together! Awesome PS and your bass player sounds like one cool dude. grin

Catchy song, and I see you couldn't resist a bit of Marty optimism: "So maybe we'll be better friends."

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
