Hi all, I like to work through ASIO (ASIO4ALL seems to work for me) when possible to avoid latency issues when recording vocals into RB. Sometimes however, depending on the song and the plug-in load, RB becomes unstable and I find that I can only get things back to normal by switching to MME for a while.

One quirk I've noticed with MME has to do with editing a midi track in Piano Roll View. When I use an ASIO driver and am trying to edit individual notes in this view, I can grab the note with the mouse and I will hear that note play when I grab it. This is great for instance when trying to set a new pitch for the note. But when using the MME driver, when I grab a note in this view the note does not sound. Am I missing a setting or something for this?

ASIO does absolutely nothing for recording or playback. there are only 2 instances were you need ASIO:
1. Playing a software synth with a MIDI controller
2. If your sound card supports multiple outputs but only provides them as ASIO outs.

That's it. No sound quality improvement, nothing.

You don't say what you are using for the MIDI synth at the time, but if you highlight the right "regular" MIDI synth in the MIDI Output Window and then use "Route Thru to MIDI driver" checkbox down below while using a DXi synth, you might be able to hear pianoroll edits in the pianoroll view.

Alternatively, and likely better, try turning the ASIO buffer size up a notch when the going gets rough. (You should close down BB, change the buffer size in the ASIO4ALL control panel, then open BB again so it will "take").

I find that, when recording multiple tracks, I can run my ASIO drivers at a much lower buffer setting than when doing mixdowns with lots of tracks and plugins. At that part of the thing, I simply change the ASIO buffer to suit the job.

Thanks for the tip on ASIO buffer size Mac, I'll give that a try. In regards to midi synth, I'm using the VSC DXi as default, and have the checkbox below checked for this in the midi driver setup window. But in that same window I can't highlight the VSC in the upper righthand box because it does not show up there. The only drivers listed there are Microsoft Midi Mapper and Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. Shouldn't the VSC also show up there as a selection?

No unless you have the old VSC that wasn't a DXi

With MME selected as the driver, when I click on a midi note in Piano Roll Editor, the only way I hear a pitch is if I have either the Microsoft Midi Mapper or Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth selected in the upper right-hand box (those are the only 2 selections available), and all I get is a piano sound on all tracks, except for drum sound on track with midi channel 10, even though I have checked the "re-route midi playback to default dxi/vsti synth below (with the vsc dxi selected). When using ASIO I do not have this problem; any note clicked on will sound with whatever instrument is set up for that track.

That is likely all you can do given what you have in the way of software MIDI synths available.

Use ASIO and try changing the buffers for when things get rough, see if that helps.

For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.

Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.

Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!

Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.

Band-in-a-Box® 2024 Review: 4.75 out of 5 Stars!

If you're looking for a in-depth review of the newest Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows version, you'll definitely find it with Sound-Guy's latest review, Band-in-a-Box® 2024 for Windows Review: Incredible new capabilities to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs.

A few excerpts:
"The Tracks view is possibly the single most powerful addition in 2024 and opens up a new way to edit and generate accompaniments. Combined with the new MultiPicker Library Window, it makes BIAB nearly perfect as an 'intelligent' composer/arranger program."

"MIDI SuperTracks partial generation showing six variations – each time the section is generated it can be instantly auditioned, re-generated or backed out to a previous generation – and you can do this with any track type. This is MAJOR! This takes musical experimentation and honing an arrangement to a new level, and faster than ever."

"Band in a Box continues to be an expansive musical tool-set for both novice and experienced musicians to experiment, compose, arrange and mix songs, as well as an extensive educational resource. It is huge, with hundreds of functions, more than any one person is likely to ever use. Yet, so is any DAW that I have used. BIAB can do some things that no DAW does, and this year BIAB has more DAW-like functions than ever."
