Jim, it looks like this is different from the KVR Audio monthly songwriting competition, which has been around since the early 2000's. I used to participate in that one regularly, and was fortunate enough to win some of the prizes over the years (How I amassed my GSi VB3 and various electric pianos, and some other sweet VSTi like Cameleon 5000).

This looks like it's a different one based off of an independent competition that ran itself out of KVR's forums, where they are using the songwriting competition to feed the mix challenge in a way.

entering these helped me push my abilities in composition, recording techniques, collaborating with persons across the world, etc. Now I concentrate most of that activity in February with February Album Writing Month.

Everyone that wants to move their craft along should try some type of these competitions.
