I cannot find out how to get the "virtual" piano up on my initial Band-in-a-Box screen (so that I can record midi straight from my computer without connecting a MIDI keyboard).

If you click on the places labelled 1, 2, 3 on the image below, that will enable the keyboard wizard so that you can use the bottom two rows of your QWERTY keyboard to enter notes.

Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
