In the eighties I met a man that worked for the Coke legal department. His job was to visit establishments that sold Pepsi. That was everything from fast food restaurants, movie houses, hotel bars and so on.

He would shop for some items and one of the items he would request was a Coke. If the server said, "I'm sorry but we offer Pepsi, is that okay?" then life was good. However, if the server said okay or brought the drink without saying anything then life was bad. He notified the legal department of the discrepancy. The establishment received a notice documenting the issue observed and a cease & desist order from Coke's Atlanta home office along with a suggestion to train their servers.

This guy told me he moved from area to area and might visit as many as 9 - 12 establishments a day.

Of course the purpose of the exercise was to prevent Coke from becoming a generic name for all colas. Pepsi has people performing the same job, they just visit places that sell Coke.
