In a related post, Guido offered the following regarding training your ear to hear different modes "For me listening to a song in mixolydian doesn't really help. Playing the same song in different modes helps a lot."

In my study of modes, and in books I've read about them, I've never come across a recommended exercise to convert a song written in one mode over to another. It would seem to me that given the interrelationship between the melody and chords - this is not an obvious thing to do.

I'm wondering if:
1.) other people have converted songs from one mode to another for learning purposes
- where it works well, where it really may not make sense,

2.) Is there a way to have BB do this for me ? - to convert a song in one mode to another ? Again, it would seem that the entire intent of the songwriter would be changed in a very unpredictable way - one that doesn't necessarily achieve the new 'modal sound' intended.

Thanks in advance,
Joe V.

Wow - almost every question I ask, Mike comes back with a pinpointed on-target internet reference. And I thought I was a good googler (actually, I am - but I still think there is enormous value to an experienced musician's answer - because they will give you not only the 'theoretically' accurate answer, but actual real-world experience in having applied it).

But that said - I wonder Mike if you actually google results that I maybe could have or should have - or if you actually have played around - for example with this particular concept (modal transposition) for yourself in your own pursuit of music mastery.

excerpt from the above link
Here's some examples of tunes using modal harmony:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwmRQ0PBtXU
(four different 7sus4 chords, mostly mixolydian, but hints of dorian or aeolian)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEC8nqT6Rrk
D dorian - listen for the quartal chords from 0:36
(this tune has a bridge in Eb dorian, but that's the only change)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GgXqIf9h4s
Real open-ended modal improvisation: five different modes, no pre-composed structure; they just change from one mode to the next on cue. (Notice the minimal harmonization from the piano.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SINl5...eature=related
Lydian mode - largely a C lydian groove, but with a change to Ab lydian at one point. Similar to "So What" he uses two chords a whole step apart in a riff to outline the mode (D/C and C).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KbTUCdIiRjE
Phrygian mode: E phrygian, with a move to A phrygian and back.
