How many iPad users do we have here, and do any of you have the Alesis iO dock? I am trying to do a little recon before I buy one to see if it really worth it.

eddie, a friend is very close to pulling the trigger on the Akai Synthstation 49 controller keyboard designed for the iPad. http://www.akaipro.com/synthstation49I'll let you know if he goes ahead with it and what his thoughts are. As for the iodock, there's 3 pages of rather unrestrained user comments at KVRaudio: http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=324432&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 with links to reviews elsewhere. If I had an iPad, I'd be saving up for way too much kit for the thing. I do believe we are at the nexus of another wave of landslide change in the music making world with the ipad and iphone interfaces. At the apple store, the iRig for Amplitube is $39. That is simply too cool.

Interesting. Tough call because the Alesis has the portability but the Akai has more function. I would have to decide which matters more to me. Or just buy both....!!

I'm ready to cave. (cave in, give in, throw in yer towel, go marching OUT, tebow out, etc)
I want to play from a laptop or tablet, the latter is way better.
Taking pictures of sheet music and seeing if they are a viable alternative to books is my quest. Either load them up or use the camera to take the picture.
If Apple had only included a card slot it would be easier.

I'm watching this from the sidelines as well. So much cool stuff that has 75% function of what I imagine it should.
In reading all of this buzz on these two particular items, it's also interesting to see what the 'hackers' have attempted. Many are talking about using small controller keyboards interfaced to the iPad for 'core midi' functionality.
I'm going to have to really dig in to see what it all means. I've been a VST/VSTi plugin user for nearly 10 years now, so I completely grok with soft-synths. This core midi on the apple ios is a new twist that I just might have to pay attention to.
I'm not an apple guy. I use a sandisk .mp3 player, and a Nook for e-reading. But the iPad can do all of that stuff and it's oh-so-sleek, and these cool toys that plug into it, etc.
I can see myself jumping ship to go ipad/Garageband/coremidi/iodock with a smallish controller keyboard and mic and then all the time I spend on the road could be some fun with hotel room composition and arrangement.

How do you move your lyrics files now, John? I send them to box.net from the computer, then go to box.net on the iPad, and pull them down.
The reason I would prefer a laptop though is simple. On a laptop, I can run a teleprompter program, with a footswitch to start and stop it, and scroll the lyrics. Given that I am at a place now where I need a font so big it looks like a billboard, the lyrics don't fit on a page.
Always options, and an ever changing process.

I haven't read those authors. One of my former co-workers used this all the time and I acquired it from him.

I have the Ipad2 and love the thing. The Ipad3 is to be revealed in March and from the rumors should have a a quad core and total awsome graphics. I have looked at lots of music hardware and apps for this thing and trying to decide to invest in or not. However there are some totally cool new products that were just shown at the Winter NAMM show so I will post some links to some of the stuff that really caught my eye.
Wave Machine Labs has a new app called Auria that is a full featured 48 track DAW that can record up to 24 tracks at the same time with the right hardware. Watch the demo it looks way cool.

Mackie has a new hardware Mixer that the Ipad rests in and mix totally wireless.

Alesis has introduced several new hardware products for the Ipad the AMPdock and the DMdock for drums as well as the IOdock

Some other ones you might want to check out is Apogee, Agile Partners, Digitech and Pocketlabworks are all making hardware for the Ipad. It is amazing what these things can do now.

I'll throw in my 2 bits worth on the iPad. I have an iPad 2 but really haven't used it for music much. I bought the mobile version of FL Studio, played with it awhile and thought it's OK, nothing special. Good as a toy for the grandkids if they are musically inclined. Good for ideas while away from the computer (which I'll never do) but so is a laptop.
Overall opinion of the iPad is ........ good for browsing the internet while in bed. I can't understand why anyone would want to record with an iPad when an Intel i7, Win 7, 2 28 inch monitors and 2 gb hard drive is available.
I don't understand the hoopla over this item. Even if you go mobile with it, a laptop is way more powerful (and cheaper, too). The apps are cheaper for it for sure. But to do serious recording on a 7 3/4 x 5 3/4 screen is not something I'm interested in. Maybe I'm getting old.

Yep, you are Charlie as am I. It's all about eyesight buddy. My 30 year old assistant can read stuff on his phone that I need my custom computer/reading glasses to see. I did a gig a few months ago where one of the young players pulled up charts on his phone using an Android app called 4realbook or something like that. I costs 6 bucks. He put his phone on his music stand and read it from 5 feet away. I could barely read it from 2 feet.
For young people that Ipad is more than big enough to do whatever they want. We have several hundred pilots as tax clients and almost all have Ipads for all kinds of pilot related stuff like charts and things. That's why the Air Force just announced they're buying 18,000 IPads for their pilots. It replaces whole big leather bags full of flight charts. Of course, those pilots are young and have perfect eyesight.

Lots of my friends are getting new eyes. Once you have cataracts you get new lenses and they are getting 20/20 vision and can read again. Too bad they couldn't just say, you will need this operation in the future(Me!) so we will let you have it sooner for a buck and a half. I'd go for something reasonable. There is a crap shoot here, maybe I croak and save them the money. For now I can just pass the drive at night thing, it's the street lights that look like constellations.
I thought retirement sounded like fun, until I realized the main reason for it is you are just worn out and most parts cannot be replaced.
I'm SURE some manufacturer is going to come out with a fold-able big affordable portable screen. Please?

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
