A friend sent me the chords to a song of his, I am very familiar with the song. I couldn't get any style to work, I asked him what's different and he said that it was in 3/3. It's just a pop song, but there are no styles in 3/3, do I have any other options?

I've never heard of 3/3. If it is 3 dotted quarter notes per measure, try 9/8

if you Google "3/3 time signature" you will get a little discussion of this, but if its "just a pop song", its either wrong or a joke or not. Let us know.

There's no such thing as a third note so thus there is no such thing as 3/3 time.

He said he can rewrite it no problem, but as Kelso mentioned, you can google 3/3 and find quite a few people who will contend that it exists. I'll ask the writer more about it when we meet, right now we are doing a lot of stuff via Internet before I record his parts.

Interesting, I google 3/3 time signature, and this thread is in the top 5 hits. Let's hear what your buddy is calling 3/3

Three beats to the measure (good so far), and a third note gets one beat. Really?

Yes, please do post an example of this.

3/3
Same as 4/4 and 2/2.
Do the math.
It just looks different.
Sounds like they finally fixed the waltz!

Yeah, apparently the people who say 3/3 exists are citing unusual examples that wouldn't have anything to do with the song in question. When he gets here in late June, I'll post something if anyone is still interested by then. (slinking away...)

New one on me. Either a typo or joke.

We all know 2/4 means 2 quarter note beats to the bar. (or 2 crotchet beats to the bar as I usually call it.)

We all also know the bottom number refers to the type of beat that is getting 1 count. So, 4 = quarter notes, 8 = eighth notes, 16 = sixteenths and so on.

I'm interested in how these people describe their mysterious 3/3 time. 3 what to a bar?

Just curious. I always enjoy a good laugh!

Probably due to the large amount of people who mistakenly think that a Time Signature is a Fraction...

Well, that may just be evolving, too.

Maybe they mean a dotted half note in the upper part accompanied by three crotchets in the lower part. If this will be followed, they play Take Five in 5/5 time and the Unsquare Dance in 7/7 time...

Maybe they thinking in dotted minims. 3 dotted minim beats to a bar. Even so this would be 9/4 time. I'd like to see this music.

My husband said maybe it's triplet music written for three people! LOL

Someone just has to explain what a 1/3 note is.

Traditional note lengths (like many things) follow the series 2^n, or two to the nth power, n being a positive integer - like 2^1=2, 2^2=4, 2^3=8, etc., so you get 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, ... Sound familiar?

No 3 in the list.

I can't wait for BeelzeBob to get the straight scoop from his friend and lets us know how this works. This could change my life.

Yes. I for one am totally intrigued. A look at the first few bars would clear it all up.

It's really all of bunch of bull & nonsense. And besides even if you want to entertain the idea of a 1/3 note it would be infinite.A half note is EXACTLY 1/2 of a whole note. a 1/4 note is EXACTLY 1/2 of a half note etc. A 1/3 of a whole note is an INFINITE number.

Sounds link something from Spinal Tap. "...amp goes to 11", and "... we use 1/3 notes when everyone else uses 1/4 notes". Oh, and don't forget that "Em is the saddest key of all"

Last post before I crash for the night.

I totally agree, bull & nonsense. It'll be decimal time next. (referring to clocks that is, not music)

Still like to see this music though.

Night all, I'm out of here.
