I have a dell laptop through my work (I'm a music teacher). I bought band in a box 2008 and really love the idea of it, but am having difficulty getting beyond the quality of the sound. I did call support and they had my change something -I think it was just using the computer's regular sound card and they had my switch it to something through biab. However, the sound still seems pretty iffy to my ears. I'm not going to be able to change a sound card (I don't think) because it is not my computer. Is there anything else I can do to improve the sound so I can make the accompaniments that I really would like?
Thanks

Hi Sue,
The modern soundcard does not make the MIDI sounds anymore.
Those are created by synthesizers, software or hardware.
Most likely you started out using the default little microsoft software synthesizer that comes bundled with Windows (if you are not on a Mac) and the folks at pgmusic had you install or switch on the VSC Virtual Sound Canvas DXi synth? That sounds a tad better.
If you are trying to use the laptop's speakers, that can be a problem. They just aren't large enough for good low end bass and low midrange response. Hooking the earphone jack of your laptop up to external fullrange speaker system can help tremendously.
There is also the hardware synth, which these days can change the sound to an entirely different and more realistic level, too. Check out the Ketron SD2 Orchestral Wizard sold by pgmusic as an excellent sounding alternative.

My Toshiba laptop's sound is pretty weak,Imho. I did go to thw Coyote Forte software synth, but improving sound from the laptop speakers was not my goal in using it. I have a little cm-30 Roland monitor cube that provides some pretty decent sound. I use it to practice with with a cable from the headset jack on the laptop to the cube. For our small live performances, I use an Archos Jukebox as an mp3 player into the Cube. This works well in small venues but would be too small for an auditorium. The Archos has a 20GB hard drive which makes file operations quite easy. The Roland Cube works well for me YMMV.
