Kemmrich is correct that the 6 = Simple Duple time.
9 and above would be Compound Duple.
My bad, for typing it above in my explanation.
The TRIO section of many Sousa Marches exhibits the use of 6/8 as Simple Duple march time, where each of the two march "steps" is divisible by three's.
